How does one go about it?
I play guitar. I can scream great, but I suck at clean singing.
I'm looking to be a hardcore/post-hardcore/progressive/emo guitarist OR a hardcore/metalcore/death metal vocalist.
Advice? Personal experiences? Commiseration?

Well, posting some adds in local newspaper should do the job.
Where do you live? There must be someone with the same idea in your town if you are not in a isolated place.
I dont know. Pubs maybe?
Hardcore/metal heads like to drink... wondering:confused:

I'm 17, and straight-edge to boot.
Thanks for the newspaper idea though, I'll try it =]

17? Hummm, stay away from the pubs then, it is bad for you, alcohol is a drug and you should stay away from it.
I assume you are a student.
Perhaps in your school you could find other ppl with the same interests.
Not sure about the news add at your age. not safe.
school music festivals are preety common depends on where you live. The ideal place to find musicians and bands with ppl around your age.
I hope it helps.

Try the church, there are many youngsters who play instrument coz they have no other alternative to play music.
I know many people who used to play for choirs at first & then went on to start a rock band.... it might seem silly at first, thinking of a choirboy playing heavy metal, but trust me it isn't..
Secondly, try myspace, facebook or whatever social website that is a hit in your locality..
They have many groups/communities which show interest in starting their own bands..
then visit the profiles of each member & if he is from your locality or shares similar interests send him a message.
Third option is do a google local search with keywords such "guitarist wanted", etc..
