each year as you know, music publications bring out their lists of the so called "best albums" of the year...

AllMusic has fairly extensive and comprehensive lists of their favourites, which they categorise, plus they have a general ‘Best of 2017’ - https://www.allmusic.com/year-in-review/...st-of-2017.
I quite like the categorisation idea - I’ll put a couple of them up as I get to them, and rate my own favs from their lists as well (despite not having listened to everything on those lists - nowhere near!). First category of my choice then … https://www.allmusic.com/year-in-review/...songwriter

looking at your list
doesn't it make you curious about all those you haven't heard?

^No, not much. I do listen to artists I’m not familiar with MH, but I'm selective. I know, firstly from the precis, and secondly after 30-60 seconds into a track whether or not it’s likely to be my thing, and if not, I just move on. Impossible to get to listen to every new release, and I don't want to, so I figure I may as well hear what I have a good chance of liking – makes life much more pleasant. Besides, I’m relying on you and CH to warn us about the rubbish!
These lists are the editors’ favourites and the tip of the iceberg – and actually, I’m beginning to think they are so subjective as to be completely pointless. Everyone’s going to have their own favourites, I understand that, but at least two of mine don’t even show up here despite higher ratings (AllMusic ratings, that is) than some of those listed below, so it would be interesting to know what criteria they are using. Anyway ... in the grand scheme of things, this is all of very little consequence!!
Favourite Folk & Americana Albums - https://www.allmusic.com/year-in-review/...-americana
- Bill MacKay / Ryley Walker – SpiderBeetleBee +
- Buffy Sainte-Marie - Medicine Songs
- Chris Hillman - Bidin' My Time **
- Eliza Carthy / The Wayward Band - Big Machine
- Jason Isbell / Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit - The Nashville Sound ***
- Josh Ritter – Gathering ***
- Kacy & Clayton - Siren's Song *
- Kasey Chambers – Dragonfly
- Lilly Hiatt - Trinity Lane
- Los Straitjackets - What's So Funny About Peace Love and Los Straitjackets
- Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real / Lukas Nelson - Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real
- Mark Lanegan Band / Mark Lanegan – Gargoyle +
- Nikki Lane - Highway Queen
- Old 97's - Graveyard Whistling
- Old Crow Medicine Show - 50 Years of Blonde on Blonde
- Pokey LaFarge - Manic Revelations
- Ray Wylie Hubbard - Tell the Devil I'm Gettin' There as Fast as I Can *
- Rhiannon Giddens - Freedom Highway *
- Robert Plant - Carry Fire ***
- Rodney Crowell - Close Ties **
- Shannon McNally - Black Irish
- Steve Earle / Steve Earle & the Dukes - So You Wannabe an Outlaw
- The 18 Wheelers / Zephaniah OHora - This Highway
- The Dustbowl Revival - The Dustbowl Revival
- The Mavericks - Brand New Day
- The Secret Sisters - You Don't Own Me Anymore
- Turnpike Troubadours - A Long Way from Your Heart
- Tyler Childers – Purgatory
- Whitney Rose - Rule 62
- Whitney Rose - South Texas Suite
My first choice from this list would have to be Robert Plant - Carry Fire and the one album I'd like to hear in its entirety, having only heard a clip or two, is Spiderbeetlebee.
