Anyone here who has had knee injuries? I just recently found out that I have a tear on my lateral meniscus, doc said I should take a surgery. Any thoughts?

Honestly, I've been doing sports all my life and devoted first 30 years of my life to hard training and on occasion injuries just can't be avoided... A D minor followed by... But seriously... I bet my 50 cents there are zilions of communities out there better suited for this question...
But, my experience from team mates having had the same problem as you is... Sorry to say, surgery. The knee tend to lock in place more and more if you don't let someone skilled with the surgery knife (scalpel, or what do you name it?) do his/her job...
Good luck

Were they able to get back to playing competitively after surgery? Specially with meniscus injuries?

Depends... Most of them were but some needed support from some knee supporting device...
But there's no general answer to how one will be affected in such circumstances... And, are you willing to dedicate yourself to quite som Quadriceps training I guess the better your chances are...
Plenty of leg training schemas out there, but if you want some that may make you look like Eric Heiden (or Ted Ligety) below your hips, I have some ideas

My left knee still bothers me from time to time...also an old soccer injury! I didn't get surgery as the pain dissipated. I had the knee x-rayed recently and they found nothing wrong...I remarked that it must be arthritis...doctor agreed!...ha ha.

Arthrisis, just plain exhausted and "torn" knee joint surfaces, isn't it? Guess the treatment of such damage is a bit different from one following a meniscus (?) rupture... Nonetheless they both are troublesome, consider myself a lucky bastard having played soccer and bandy (unknown to all of you I guess) for more than three decades without any permanent injuries... I guess:

Did you play in a team and in some organised league system, Steve?
Know Canada ladies are in world top ten or so, in soccer... Are there organised series including delegation and promotion for men and/or women in Ca?
