Mine are....
1. Merle Haggard - The old Merle doesn't quite have the vocals that he use to, but the young Merle was excellent. If you listen I believe he is about the smoothest country singer I've ever heard. He is a true grit country singer, and had excellent writing skills to go a long with it. 2. Hank Williams Jr. - Well a lot think he isn't as good as his Daddy, a lot think he is better. I guess that's kinda of been his whole life story. Standing in the shadows of his Father. However, Hank Jr. is almost a number one for me, infact I prefer his music over Merle Haggards. I just don't think he is as good a singer as Merle, and song writer. Although Hank is a damn good song writer as well. Hank however, I think is very underrated. If you dig into some of his material, a little before and a little after he had his near death accident on ajax mountain, you can see what I'm talking about. His vocals in "Eleven Roses" and "Angels Get Lonesome Sometimes" are remarkable. It's not just Family Tradition and his other big party songs that are great. The man had so many songs that have been left unheard by many people. I rate him number 2. I think he was way better then his Father. Vocally fair and square, songwriting -- not for the sad stuff for sure. His Father had that down better, but all around he is better. His life story is also interesting as well with his career. 3. George Strait - Strait has to be here. He has been probably the most consistent country act to grace the scene. Song after song he has put out and have been number 1 hits. Solid vocals as well, and a good person I believe. It's hard to beat his material as a whole. Again you can dig and dig up good songs by this guy, it's hard to find a bad song by George Strait. 4. Conway Twitty - Conway turned country, was rockabilly, "Elvis wannabe" at least I thought so. Conway had a lot of great songs, and tremendous vocals. Probably more advance on his range then any of the above singers, but his material just isn't as good. At least I don't think so. Maybe it's my preference, none the less his singing a lone gives him a top 5 spot for me. 5. Alan Jackson - Jackson is like Strait in a way, just consistent. And a decent singer, probably the weakest vocally out of the other 4, but I love his music so he goes here for me.
