A Country kerfuffle and the aftermath + some singers
#1
Country music has always been female-performer hostile. It may be demographics--most listeners are women and they want to hear men...or so it's said. Then along comes this lunkhead saying that in a way that insults women performers--all of them. Predictable backlash. Here's a NY Times opinion piece on all this: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/06/21/arts/m...-bite.html << For the original remarks, see this (Page 8 "This One's Not for the Girls): https://www.countryaircheck.com/pdf_publ...202015.pdf
Here's a selection of performers mentioned in Para. 8 of the Times piece:

That was a very interesting read. I don't know if this Hill guy meant anything offensive to the female country singer/listener or not, but the guy is a consultant. People pay him to tell them what he thinks. So he told them what he thought. As far as country music generally, if I remember correctly, I did not hear a single female on the radio this morning (about 1/2 hour worth of listening, but I never really thought about it before.) Hard rock stations are the same way, you could pry listen for hours to some stations and not hear a female. But, when it all comes down to it, everyone is trying to make money. Hill says what he thinks because it makes him money, country stations play male music because the "experts" say that's what people want, and they want to make money. Male country singers sing about what they sing about because people wanna hear it. A station could be "gender neutral" and go 50/50 with male/female music but would pry go out of business pretty quick (apparently). Sad = YES. True = Apparently.

Sistah TDN--I agree 100% with what you say (and thanks for taking the time to write a well-reasoned response). Not speaking for the women involved but it's not that he didn't speak a Revealed Truth; it's the way he said it. Yes, he was speaking to a particular gender but some of us men take umbrage too. The funniest thing is that the lettuce just lays there, dumb and green (near-zero nutritional value and actually takes more energy for us to process than we get from it); it's the tomatoes that give a salad nutrition and taste. Nobody's forgetting that "tomato" is an at least semi negative descriptor of a woman, and thus does not pass muster here. His Momma should spank him.
I had a second purpose and that was to expose those terrif artists. Kinda bootlegged it in.

You know what I wish for? A women's equivalent of those '70's Outlaws (Cash, Jennings, those guys)--I have no idea if that's possible but a guy can wish...

Gretchen Wilson  Much better than Cash. I never will get the popularity for Cash. I saw him in person with June who could not sing either.

I will never get the popularity of some of today's artists either. There is so much great music out there that will never get any recognition or playtime, meanwhile well known artists (*cough* Britney Spears *cough*) can put out shallow, ridiculous "music" at times and it goes straight to the top. Now, don't get me wrong, I like Britney Spears, but not at the expense of great artists that will never get a shot. Imagine what radio would sound like if there were no politics involved and they played good music?! Would you rather listen to Britney Spears "Pretty Girls" or Elle King's "America's Sweetheart"...WHAT?!?!?! You've never heard that song?!?!?! *SIGH* Not surprising.

However, if someone told me I could sell 1,000,000 records singing about flipflops (for the millionth time) and beer or 1,000 records singing about what I really want to sing about...I'd pry go with flipflops and beer too. It's easy, it's doesn't make enemies, and gets you a nice paycheck.

Ain't even bad. I take every opportunity to shamelessly promote a song whenever possible. (See above - HA!)

Love that Elle King selection, though she's not only a country artist as those she tours with shows. Can't wait where she takes that talent next.: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elle_King

She strikes me more of a soul-sy/blues-sy sort of sound. I just picked it 'cause I thought it was a good example of what we, as a radio-listening community, are missing. Instead, they have us listening to so much meaningless crap, that is void of any kind of originality or meaning, for the umpteenth time. Frustrating!!! Personally I only use the radio as a necessary evil (that being when I forget my digital player and the local sports talk station is playing commercial).
