Beginner with a question about ukuleles
#1
Hi I'm Tim,

I am a teenager and have always been very passionate about music and finally, recently I have managed to scrape some money together to buy an instrument. I was thinking about buying a friend's bass guitar that he barely used but now, after inspiration from 21 pilots, have become interested in ukuleles. I can spend up to about £120 comfortably, maybe £140 max.

However, i haven't played the ukulele before, so i was wondering how hard it is to learn the ukulele with no past experience and therefore if it is worth purchasing one. Also if i do i dont know whether to get a bad one to learn with or just get an expensive one to get as much as i can for my money.

Lastly, if anyone has any recommendations for types/ brands of ukulele for that price please let me know. I really like the luna model's looks personally.

thanks
Tim

Tim, I don't know much about ukuleles but there is one word of advice I can give you. If you learn on a bad instrument (bad intonation, bad action) you will probably give up. This is the number one reason people give up learning a new instrument. Before you pick an instrument decide what kind of music you want to play. What type of music do you like/listen to?

I can't answer your questions specifically--sorry-- but as inspiration, here's a bit on Eddie Vedder: http://www.music-discussion.com/showthre...die-Vedder and in another Thread (Posts 4-6): http://www.music-discussion.com/showthre...jazz/page5 If you further decide that, having mastered the uke, you want to to try the mandolin, look in that same Thread further on.
I wasn't familiar with 21 Pilots--is this them? http://www.allmusic.com/artist/twenty-on...iscography and http://www.twentyonepilots.com/

BTW, one of these Websites can surely help your quest.: http://www.topukulelesites.com/ << You can narrow your search with the "All Uke Sites" tab--lessons, blogs, events, etc.

I agree whole-heartedly--never be satisfied with the mediocre in anything. Remember you have control.

Hey Tim, I would say if you spend a little more for a better instrument it will be money well spent. You'll be more likely to push through that plateau when you are bored and wanna cash it in. I think Twenty-One Pilots is a great choice as far as inspiration goes but just in case you need a little extra motivation...here's a little Life of Dillon to help ya make your decision (they rank right up there with Twenty-Pilots for me, maybe even a little higher). Just remember, in the end, your THE JUDGE, it's nothing get STRESSED OUT over:wink:

Paul McCartney only picked up a Ukulele for the first time several years ago...
He released a single called "dance tonight" using that instrument.....

I'm nt in a position right now to post the link for that track....maybe someone could do it for me....

Also as George Harrison loved the sound of that instrument so much Macca occasionally pays tribute to him in concert covering "something" with Ukulele in tow....

Maybe someone could post a clip of that also....

That looks like (and more importantly sounds like) a Tenor Uke - the bigger version of the more common Soprano Uke.

I have a Mahalo Uke and it is a good sounding and easily tunable instrument.

You really need to try them before buying. Some Ukes struggle to stay in tune so find a store that will let you play a few and play for more than 2 minutes. Figure out which three songs you'd like to play - get the fingering charts (plentiful on the web) and try some Ukes out. You may find you are much more a Soprano (smaller) or Baritone (Larger) player.

Here's to your first performance - https://ukutabs.com/t/twenty-one-pilots/house-of-gold/

Enjoy!!!

Spent countless hours, scouring the far reaches of the 'Net and finally came up with this. If you believe that, I've got a bridge for sale...

On "Dance Tonight", I believe it's a mandolin...: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3Tw9LrLs2U
