What do you make of the reappearance of vinyl? Is this just a fad or is this going to grow? I believe either Bowie's latest album or Floyd are at the top. They now have clubs in Ireland where young people are sitting down and listening to WHOLE albums in one sitting. Seems to be quite popular at the moment. This week in Dublin 'The Wall' was examined in minute detail. Just heard this on a radio show and the comments from the younger folk are quite interesting - they are starting to see these albums as movies rather than the 3 minute tracks they currently have on their playlist. Comments anyone?

Excellent topic. Glad to hear those younger folks are listeners, not just consumers. And vinyl has been democratized--for a long time, it was just the 180-gram higher end (for which read-"snob") stuff that was issued with corresponding nose-bleed prices. CDs have gotten measurably better but there are still nuances only available in vinyl. Here's a site which picks the best of that week's crop: http://www.factmag.com/2014/10/04/the-we...leases-30/ and a background Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vinyl_revival

Came across another good reason to seek vinyl--they can be screaming bargains. Case in point: In researching a good band's last pressing before a long hiatus (Siegel-Schwall Band's R.I.P. Siegel-Schwall), the CD is $125+; the vinyl <$100.

Refreshing to hear that today's youth are listening to full albums rather than the easy 3 minute pop song! One cannot grasp the importance and brilliance of an artist without listening to their albums! Jerome Wrote:What do you make of the reappearance of vinyl? Is this just a fad or is this going to grow? I was born in the CD era, so vinyl has little nostalgic value to me. My turntable isn't high-quality enough to produce a discernible difference in sound quality from other formats. Yet there's something intangible about putting on a record that you don't get from any other format. I've recently started collecting, and now I'm hooked.

Glad to hear you are not nostalgic--it can impede. I hope your economic situation improves to the point where a better turntable, amp and speakers become viable. With them and more finely-tuned hearing, mysteries will be revealed.

One can purchase used vinyl at a ridiculously cheap price...nabbed Chris Rea, Eagles, BTO, Roxy Music, Jeff Lorber Fusion, Blondie , all under 3 bucks! My favourite record store, CD Heaven, has tons of vinyl!

i only buy "new" vinyl when it is to keep my Paul Weller vinyl collection intact...all of his vinyl albums/singles that i buy are stored unopened in their original shrinkwrapped seal.
the only other ones i buy new(which is rare nowadays) are the odd limited edition or a special anniversary edition...
the last couple i bought were:
Pink Floyd "dark side of the moon 30th anniversary vinyl
Gorillaz "plastic beach", because the first 500 copies released had different coloured artwork to the ones that followed,so it may be worth money at some point?
Paul McCartney "ram",plain white sleeve, and recorded in mono...a limited print run as part of the 're-issues' series last year.
