I have been a die-hard Johnny Cash fan as long as I can remember, I've been in fist fights over the man, but when judging a cover of a song - ESPECIALLY a Johnny Cash song the listener has to set aside their feelings for the artist. Johnny Cash was a legend, but he didn't write every song he sang, BOB DYLAN didn't write every song he sings. "Hurt" by Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), is undeniably one of the best songs ever recorded by Cash, why? because he made it his own. I'll admit I was furious when I heard this song was being covered by Mr. Boyd, but he didn't sing Johnny Cash's "I Walk The Line" as Craig Wayne Boyd, He sang Craig Wayne Boyd's " I Walk The Line", If you listen to his voice you can hear echoes of gospel, Lefty Frizzell, and Johnny Cash. Mr. Boyd made this song his own, he changed the melody and gave it a gospel feel, few people know that Johnny Cash himself wrote "I Walk The Line" as a way of sneaking some gospel into his music, because he, like Craig Wayne Boyd was a man of god and was proud of his faith. I as one of Johnny Cash's biggest fans believe that this cover pays more respect to any other recorded version ever - and I've heard them all.

Interesting Nick! I know exactly where you're coming from. It's refreshing to hear different interpretations of popular songs. Johnny's version of Hurt was astounding as was his cover of U2's One!
The ultimate connection is between a performer and its' audience!

Whether you like his conclusion or not (and I'm not taking a position), Nick has given us a well-considered, well-written testament. We need more of these. Belated welcome aboard, Nick, and continue to grace us with your posts.

Welcome to MD nick....
I'm a JC diehard fan also...
His version of Hurt is my favourite track of his,it sums up him and his life perfectly.
His cover of The Beatles "in my life" is also up there with Hurt IMO.
