"Little" Jimmy Scott
#1
One of the most distinctive voices in music, both tonality and approach to a song. Polarizing: you either love it or it drives you up the wall. Suffered a genetic defect that caused his voice (details in his bio). We lost a lot when contract disputes and such drove him out of music for all those years. You could classify him as a jazz OR an R&B singer--he was both at once. Another of those "Drop the needle anywhere" artists. http://www.allmusic.com/artist/little-ji.../biography << one thing this doesn't say--he had a growth spurt at 37, shooting his height up 8" to 5"7"--that must have been painful.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srP6mod9lCo << not the original version but this song broke him out in the late-'40's
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRmUWeD9YR0 << Commenter Gilles is spot-on
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwnBOIH7PkE << Nobody ever caressed a lyric as well. Nobody.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyeaeTJqg3Q << Never over-sang--you were in that song with him. You hear him in your heart, not just your ears.
2 from a '62 album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FFq4FioUVc and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vSaXz4eLgRk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6DCx87mN9m0 << Mr. Scott and Etta James and nobody else on this song
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evhRq3bvScU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ud4xnX3gaZ8 << He could sing modern material--the right song, natch
A bizarre pairing, for real: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UKCT-qBZ4c << It works for me
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1_QHLnhkwk << check this OMG band

BONUS: full album--he was 70+ years old!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xP-x4M4iGUI

Depending on how you listen to those down-loaded song, you may wish to consider "lossless" downloading. "Lossless" means the highs and lows of a recording (the dynamics) are not compressed--you hear ALL the music. Those sites are hard to find and frequently outlaw in nature. Better to go to a re-sale site and buy the CD if permanency is in the equation--I know hardly anybody who goes back to a DL selection after a month or so--usually too hard to find the selection--"What stick/library was it?". Hard-copy CD songs OTOH can be found in a heartbeat...
Yes, I'm talking about the viability of an industry here but also sheer practicality for us users, mainly.
