I have quoted this on this Board and to many others. To quote Mr. Yankovic, "I wasn't thinking, 'Oh, I'm on the bleeding edge of marketing, this is going to be a business model that will change the world'". The
Mandatory Fun album became the first of his 3-decade career to rise to No. 1 on Billboard's album chart. It was helped by the viral success of an online video campaign featuring his parody versions of hit songs like "Happy" and "Blurred Lines."--quoted from the NYTimes, Sunday 7/27/2014.
Personal Note: I love the puppy stuffins' out of it. This one too, for all the Star Warts:

anyone
who has to give permission when they do stuff like this?
writer, artist, label, publishing owner?
does that apply to any cover?
is a parody any different than a standard cover?

Under the "fair use" doctrine, "transformative" works like parody are OK, not subject to any controls, some of the original can be used, and no money or credit is due the original authors.>> Here's more:

i have read that Weird Al always asks the original makers of songs if they mind if he parody's a particular song of theirs...some artists dont mind, others do, and when an artist disapproves of what he intends doing to their song he respects their reply and doesnt cover that song...
so he does do what i call "the right thing" with the wishes of fellow artists...
personally, i think he is a very clever man and deserves more credit that than he gets...i fond some of his parody's annoying and immature, but others are very, very clever.
btw...i really like that "word crimes" song.
