Video killed the radio star
#1
I find that today most people expect to watch music as opposed to just listening to it. They expect to be entertained with visuals - and there's nothing wrong with that but I sometimes wonder whether people are really listening to the music anymore? It would seem that video did indeed kill the radio star. I personally find radio far more entertaining than TV, except of course if I want to watch a movie. With radio you have to use your imagination. Something that seems to be in short supply these days. TV is just chewing gum for the eyes. Any opinions?

i watch the weekly top40 Aussie charts and the UK top20 everyweek but i rarely actually watch the videos, im alwayd doing something else(like being on the internet) at the time theyre on...so the music is first and foremost to me. i only stop to watch the video of a particular track in the charts if i like the song(which is currently few and far between), then its only to see if(like you stated) if my 'imagination' of the song is similar to what they have created.

and i totally agree with your comment that "imagination is in short supply these days"....kids/teens today have no imagination whatsoever, they also have no ability to think as everything is instantaneous in the modern world...this age of computers and technology really has numbed the senses and dumbed down the way people think and live.
i actually keep saying to Dani's daughters that "you kids couldnt have survived when we were young...no computers,no cell phones, no x-box/play-stations only three or four tv stations instead of 100-ish, and you had to make your own entertainment"

really, i only watch TV for the true crime channel and the other doco channels, along with the news channels and the odd bit of sport and music.

back tot he top of your comments...NO, people dont listen to the music, they ARE entertained by visual media!

hopefully you get more replies to this thread Jerome as im curious to know that others think about this subject...

I prefer the radio for documentaries, current affairs and interviews...not music so much! I like to watch YouTube to see live concerts, like the one I went to recently, Black Sabbath! I find I am paying attention to the music, band and audience...there's a lot going on! There are some fabulous music videos out there but I don't search them out conscientiously! I also stream in a lot of selected music from mainly Grooveshark ( Canada doesn't have Spotify). Last.fm is really good also!

As for TV, I watch sports of course, the comedy channel, TCM movie channel and of course Coronation Street! (be nice now). Netflix is my main source for movies!

I find it hard to reconcile a Black Sabbath fan with someone who watches Constipation Street - lol!

The OP is arguing that stagecraft and video production have the upper hand today...no argument there. But after 30 seconds of witless tomfoolery, feel free to turn the screen off. If the musical performance absent histrionics isn't there...case closed, game over. The parameters of acceptability are ours to set. The Thread title? Yes, and sound killed silent stars and the railroads killed Pony Express and crippled stage lines... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sE6Gme921u8 << lovely version but focus on the chorus OH YEAH!

Hey, dig this...she's from Greenland so Danish is her first language. That soulful singing, that sparkle in her eyes and those unaffected movements...she could do serious damage to this old chunk of coal's heart, you bet.
Bigger note...and I'm on bended knee here. Does anyone have a legal valid link to this concert or others by this band? This stands (from what little I've seen) with any similar celebration of an artist or album --may not beat'm, but sure stands with'm (yes I'm talking about that celebration of Roy Orbison A Black & White Night).
Squaring the circle sort of: There's a 2-sided LP of the Elton John Show at MSG in 1974. Of main interest is this is believed to be John Lennon's last concert perf of any type (he joins EJ for 3 tunes: "I Saw Her Standing There", "Whatever Gets You Through the Night" and "LSD" aka "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds"). I've seen but not heard a copy. Anybody got a legal valid link? Please post it here. Please. Here are audio clips--would dearly love a video thing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SoupFtYQj8s and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zWSJQvFTg4 and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGkqm2MkyF8 << what a killer horn line!
