Late-night variety show bands
#1
The paradigm, the master is Doc Severinsen, the leader of the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson band for 25 years (1967-92) and a player on that show for 15 previous years. A 50+ year recording history as a leader, and sideman many, many times. Class all the way. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doc_Severinsen His site: http://www.docseverinsen.com/ << Still wears those wild clothes.
Some tunes with the Tonight Show...band:

The 21st Century examplar and the near-exact-opposite is the ?uestlove Band--the Roots Band-- on the Late Night with Jimmy Fallon show. Any music guests on Mr. Fallon's show were either their own complete bands or sat in with the band w/o fronting it. Nice to see big guys just sitting in...they seemed to enjoy the lack of pressure too... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Questlove He held down the held down the chair at Late Night with Jimmy Fallon--'09-'14--before taking over at The Tonight Show (February '14)
Some tunes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecYLXfpAz9s and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CshEBB8pu_w and what Ahmir Thompson's about: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CshEBB8pu_w All his stuff with the Roots and independent stuff is worth seeking--he's only in his 40's and greater brilliance lies ahead. http://www.democracynow.org/2013/8/14/qu...inging_hip

Paul Shaffer Proud Canadian with a long and varied career. Been w/ David Letterman's show since '82, leading "The World's Most Dangerous Band". Done a lot of side-work including producing, composing, you-name-it. His Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Shaffer
Some PS stuff: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2Vu2Y67DMY << That's Will Lee on guitar. This was so charming, so authentic, I had to listen twice (rare for me). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xeIDVFr0HMY << What a hoot!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_N1AkdG0PUE << a wifty, dweeb song (somebody was doing low-rent, second-tier psychedelics)...but an excellent version
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4m_dv5Z7hg << totally breakin' loose w/JB...I'm talking about the audience.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogst_L1PI1I << fun segment, this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkcjWTBSorc << Mr. Shaffer is nowhere near this but he did co-write it

The late night house-band who really impressed me is Fallon's, The Roots....
They're a well oiled machine IMO...
Their music seems to flow effortlessly whatever genre they play....

I mean, they must be good because Elvis Costello used them to back him on his last album and is very particular about who he plays with.....

True dat. I mean, he's never backed his wife...Little joke and just sniping--she's Diana Krall and they have very different kinds of musical expressions.
