Most folks think of him in terms of avant outfits like AACM or the Art Ensemble of Chicago...and they aren't wrong 'cuz he was a leader and monster player in all that. But that wasn't nearly what he was all about--he profiled every style of jazz from the '30's to the '90's ( he died in '99) with knowledge, style, enthusiasm and great chops.
