What's your thoughts on Lester Bowie ?
#1
Most folks think of him in terms of avant outfits like AACM or the Art Ensemble of Chicago...and they aren't wrong 'cuz he was a leader and monster player in all that. But that wasn't nearly what he was all about--he profiled every style of jazz from the '30's to the '90's ( he died in '99) with knowledge, style, enthusiasm and great chops. His Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lester_Bowie AMG bio and discog as leader: http://www.allmusic.com/artist/lester-bo.../biography and http://www.allmusic.com/artist/lester-bo...iscography << plus a couple of real good comps

Here's some stuff from his non-avant outfits:
NY Organ Ensemble: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXbn70y0uMA << damn shame how that cuts out
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPqJHaSUKYU << look at the all-time/real time players on this << Available from the Usual Suspect but it'll cost you and comes from Japan.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTebEk5Uvok << a straight-ahead good'un

The Leaders: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29a7DVq1-ck << every man playing truly is a leader
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZ-7mkNQlDM << Look up the other 3 in this series--be rewarded.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCkwrNjOKo4

Brass Fantasy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLluA0wtje8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXRsRo6inTM << Taking pop music to JazzTown, legit.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHL50m_LfiI

NOTE: I enjoy doing these artists' profiles because they knock my own preconceptions and prejudices cock-a hoop--I learn vastly from the research and am usually humbled.

Grand to hear but it is an acquired taste.
