When talking about the greatest music person of the last 75 years, the list starts with him. 3 Oscars, 10 Grammys and a Lifetime Achievement Award. He has been massive in both the Jazz/Pop AND Classical worlds. Two more different areas would be difficult to find in any artistic realm* and nobody has done it with more merit, more panache while remaining a guy you'd like to hang out with (his 5 ex-wives might disagree). About "...different areas..."--he essentially had to put a grand and growing 16-year jazz career on hold when in 1962, he committed to Classical music (Classical folks can be such snobs). Fortunately for us while not putting aside Classical ambitions on disc and as a renowned conductor, he started back up his Jazz doings including writing, etc in 1989. By that time the Classical world was more accepting so he could have a dual career though the Classical records (with the exception of Deutsche Grammophone) were put out on separate labels--reduces confusion. And he never mixed genres--none of his Pop/Jazz writing or playing had such Classical modes as Third Stream included. Did I mention how excellent he was as a orchestra conductor? He's had hundreds of recordings both as leader and sideman and was class in every one. His Wiki has a click-through to a discog that goes 24 pages. Set aside some time for the Wiki and prepare to be amazed: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andr%C3%A9_Previn << Why is he not better known and appreciated? Beats the puppy stuffin's out of me but maybe it's because folks have an idee fixe about a music or an artist and just don't want to delve further. I've been a monster fan since the '70's (discovered his pre-62 material and immediately got The Raptures). Here's his AMG listing though for some reason known only to themselves, the Classical material is sort-of listed but not only no reviews or rating, in many, many cases, they don't even list release dates--and these are big-label releases. Un-freaking-believable. http://www.allmusic.com/artist/andr%C3%A...iscography
* Know any romantic poets who also write hard-boiled detective fiction? Any Representational painters also killin' it in Cubism?
Not knowing much of anything about the Classical realm, I won't post on them. Here though is a good 8-tune overview of his pre-1962 stuff and some individual tunes; the later, later.:
