What Are You Reading ?
L. Ron Hubbard - Fear - 1940

Billed as classic horror by none other than Stephen King. Not much competition for the genre back then maybe. Not bad for a light read. Man has amnesia, missing a few hours out of his day. Clues along the way to let you know he may have been involved in a terrible crime for the missing time. Speaking of time I'll save you some. He offed his wife and her suspected lover then blocked it out.

Sub titled How Jerry Falwell Made God a Republican and Baptized the American Right. Throw in a brief Falwell bio and that's a good summation of the book. The man passed away in 2007 after leaving his mark on the religious right. He probably created the religious right with that Moral Majority thing. After raking in millions and forming one of the first megachurches Jerry branched out his fund raising and got into politics. Raked in millions more. Hey, this is fun. The man faced a lot of controversy and met it head on. Battle with Larry Flynt is some funny stuff. They became friends later on.

The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency by Alexander Macall Smith is both chilling and funny at the same time. It is very clever how Smith writes in the first person, from the point of view of a Botswanan woman.

I don't need time saved (from what? You want us to read the novel all the way through, yes?) Next time you stunt like this, how about putting "Spoiler Alert" with size-3 letters in front? Too much to ask? BTW, written before this joker-author went totally off the trolley with mysticism, conspiracy theories and pseudo-medical clap-trap.

Surprising in one way (Mr. Macall Smith is a white European) but not in another (he's a doctor, trained to observe, AND was reared in Rhodesia). Made into a marvellous TV mini-series: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1356380/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 << There's even a strong music connection here--the star, Jill Scott, is having a terrific career as a singer and songwriter--Grammies even G. noms, are not popcorn or confetti.

I did watch the TV series, but I have forgotten most of what I saw. Based on my poor memory, the books are darker. For example, the accounts of Mme Ramotswe's father's time in the goldmine and her marriage to a violent musician are not easy to read (imo).

I picked up a copy of Tony Iommi's biography, Iron Man, in a charity shop this afternoon. I was tempted to start it, but I've still got three-quarters of Bill Bryson's book to read.

One of the best works of fiction I have read in years. Near 900 pages so it took me awhile. Just excellent writing keeps it interesting. The movie A Place In The Sun was based on this novel. A story of love and murder. No suspense, no surprise ending, just excellent writing. A must read for those who enjoy classic literature.
