need some help with indie rock
#31
I think indie rock could actually be considered a sub genre to alternative. However, while it did start out based on the independent labels they emerged from it has become it's own sound. However, while the usage of the term indie may be different in the UK and the US I think that there are many European bands that have mastered the indie rock sound. But I must concur to the suggestions listed before me. You pretty much can't go rock with the majority of those listings. However, I will warn against Death Cab as they have become very mainstream and changed their sound to that of the pop genre their older stuff is good, and with Weezer, you kind of have to pick and choose which songs of their you like because they're kind of all over the place lyrically (some very shallow, some pretty good) but over all with the sound of "indie" just listen to a wide range of bands and pick from their because it is a very good and original sound that has not received enough credit in recent years. And that's enough of my ranting for the day Smile

Indie Rock, not Indie?
...
The Strokes?
Biffy Clyro?
Franz Ferdinand?

One of those three
I used to be a fan of the genre but i've kinda gotten out of it.
I don't know any American Indie Rock bands either.

underclass hero Wrote:rhapsody is really wrong on their indie rock listings so can u recomend some good indie bands cause now i dont know if i like indie rock

I can start by recommending Bloc Party as the cream of the crop. If you don't like them, I clearly have very different taste from you and probably can't help you to find an indie rock band that you'd like.

It depends on what kind of music you like. Indie is a broad term. Try out Sometimes5 if you like heavier rock.

I suggest checking out the Manchester Orchestra....They are by far my favorite band, and I have been following them for a while. They just came out with their second album about a week ago and it is purely amazing, they are a band that is about to blow up and become a household name, which kind of sucks because i loved having my own secret favorite band, but I guess its time to share the wealth. enjoy it!

I also thought 'indie' referred to musicians not tied down to any label. So how does 'indie' refer to a musical style. Call me stupid, but I don't get it. You mention that independent 'does not necessarily refer to the record label that released the album'. I thought the whole point of indie was that you weren't tied down to ANY label. I always assumed that this was music that musicians released by doing it all themselves and then managing it themselves. ??!!

great point
I agree
I guess they twisted the term to suit them. Not sure who them is.
But I'm pretty sure it originally meant an independent label, whatever that means.
Wait, I've got it. It means not dependent.
Or maybe there was a town called Dependent and some band member said they were in Dependent and some marketing guy thought they were referring to the type of music they played and ran with it by shortening it to indie. Thus a genre is born.
