Shirley and I were lucky enough to have met, sat, eaten and drank with 'Diz' in Sydney at a jazz venue called Soup Plus back in January 1987.
We had received two tickets, as a wedding present, to his concert at the Sydney Entertainment Centre just after we arrived back from our honeymoon and the following week were at Soup listening to a band when he walked in with two of his old friends who also happened to be friends of ours - bassist Ed Gaston and his late wife Diane. They sat with us and introduced us and we all listened to the band together while we had dinner and a few ales.
We did have our photograph taken with him but sadly never got a copy as he returned to the States shortly afterwards with the film still in his camera. :frown:

I'm not really familiar with Monk, but these are terrific records.
Really like his idiosyncratic playing, and I've now found that Oscar Peterson is not the only Jazz pianist with a taste for humming whilst playing...

Thanks Tigger! It most likely wouldn't have happened if I hadn't been in the business. Just been lucky to have met a few is all.
Most of the jazz and blues folks who have come to OZ over the years have done so to either play the same festivals or venues as I have at one time or another and we've either had conversations backstage, met (as with Diz, Jimmy Witherspoon and Nat Adderley) through friends or just caught up in the audiences. No great mysteries mate!
Even sold a BEACHHEAD'S BLUES tape to 'The Goose' from MAD MAX (Steve Bisley) at one of our own gigs in Katoomba at one time when he came to see us.

If you ever see any video of him 'live', you'll find that Les McCann has a habit of doing the same thing and I believe that even Keith Jarrett does it at times as well.

One of four albums (along with Relaxin', Cookin' & Steamin') arising from two days of recording in the mid 50s. The band included John Coltrane, and they simply recorded what they were playing regularly at live shows.
Excellent work, and this is one of a 3-CD box set which cost £2.98 including P & P !!

Both excellent. Think I'll be exploring a lot more of Monk's work...
