championing the unheralded--an ongoing thread

Sometimes slips through the cracks but always entertaining. Mixes all manner of elements in his setlist (just like the early Bluesmen did--keepin' them happy, dancing and ordering more booze is Job#1). Eddy "The Chief" Clearwater. Worked for years in NorthSide Chicago clubs to bring (can I say non-traditional?) audiences to the Blues. Here's AMG: http://www.allmusic.com/artist/eddy-clea.../biography You want technical accomplishment, look elsewhere; you want Big Fun, try this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bryzbCiEJOM and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAEZLbNmEqQ and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NuUckL8S-0 and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COPuMrRCFjg << very much earlier. And http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2MoyW3o0Mk << from one terrif album. Odd concept at first but it so works.

Now a huzzah to the recently heralded. Graham Gouldman has been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and richly deservedly so. Some tunes but first the wiki:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graham_Gouldman He's been an affecting, literate songwriter for 45+ years, and a founder and mainstay of a pretty good group: 10 c. c.

Gil Scott-Heron is one who generally slips through the cracks jazzbo, as does Dr.John

i have a couple of Gil's albums, he is brilliant, more of a narrator than a singer though...and Dr.John, well, he's just totally "out there" IMO,some of his stuff is really weird and whacky

I view him as I do the Beat poets of the '50's--the words being more important than the music (has anybody played his stuff as instrumentals?). In other words, spoken-word-with-accompaniment rather than vocal music. A hard-line position maybe. A comparo of rap vs. hip-hop? All the above have a place here--it's just defining what that place is.

Monty Alexander A Jamaican-American pianist/composer who has played well in both breezy bop and reggae-infused idioms. Sinatra's favorite pianist. One of the originators of reggae-jazz (Ernest Ranglin* being another). The AMG bio: http://www.allmusic.com/artist/monty-ale.../biography << the rest of the story is--he's never lost his humility or humanity. How about 3 reggae-jazz, 3 straight-ahead boppish?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Qqaqz9XvYM << Can't imagine a better intro to Mr. Alexander
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPMnd32zzS4 << a respected label was making a push into jazz and Mr. Alexander was one of the first signed.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzs1ul5p0t8 Bracketing a realy spiff-o staight-up jazz piece are 2 reggae-jazz pieces with the Harlem-Kingston Express--Mr. Alexander is having a good decade and we benefit.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3K_5gpoMQY Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Ork was one of the best for 2 decades--privileged to hear them as sidemen.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYMYFViAQJY << a much younger Monty but it shows how underrated he has been...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-U6R6UX2_s << you know you're going to play this on a jazz-loving friend's natal day, right?

* Ernest Ranglin stayed more strictly ethnic but broadened it with his brilliant playing...and I mean everything Jamaican--bread commercials, kids shows--he brought that magic to everything. Nice tour, this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6zm1FFrCk8 and
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0tpI4Y4W7I Another grouping, a different place: http://www.youtube.com /watch?v=jusaci34o1U

Paul Cebar One of those regional artists, well known in the biz (he recently opened for Trombone Shorty and Bonnie Raitt at major fests), who never broke through nationally. Singer (sort of)/bandleader, musicologist, radio-show host, with a great open mentoring personality. And then there's this: he's created a terrif music amalgam. He calls it "Watchamacllit music"; I call it "Cebar-rific". Here's a fansite explaining him further (lotsa clickthroughs and it's literate-adulatory, but lacks in the discog arena): http://archive.today/q9xe He's got 7 albums out, the 1 of the 2 newer being solo acoustic. His agent/publisher: http://www.wmse.org/program/way-back-hom...n-fantasy/ His music show: http://www.wmse.org/program/way-back-hom...n-fantasy/ And now what I've been yammering about:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRAOy0oItgE << What he's about currently...
Like that? How about 1/2 hour of it live on stage? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8SyS3X14kc << comparisons to Jimmy Buffett get a swift violent negative reaction from me. Just so you know...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSll_kKLy14 << with Robyn Pluer and those sweet, sloppy Louisiana saxes << Ms. Pluer sat out for a few years but she's back on the game--look her up.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcq2fBWgYUM << beginnings of the new thing in N.O.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJqmi3B9ppI << Mr. Cebar on his lonesome (I did say "singer...sort of"--got a certain naive delivery I like)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4UoOFqmcBU << what they were like back in the day--couldn't find any other older stuff

Not unheralded in his time but nearly forgotten about these days is Del Shannon. That voice, that song, live forever but he was so much more than that. Wrote most of the songs, mentor to The Beatles, was usually his own guitarist, lover/collector of historic motor vehicles (he and J. Geils were friends in this). One question though: why is it that such brilliance is so often challenged?--he at least held alcohol and pills to a draw yet still felt so empty he took his own life. Danny Gatton q.v. is another artist similarly challenged with a similar result. Oh well--his work, his uniqueness lives forever. Here's some of it (including a poignant interview on Australian TV): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j23vyo7HtX8
Pretty good mix of his hits with good pix of his life--heed the opening screen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ObvM-nDZmsE
My faves by themselves: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Jw8b7-hpVs << covers the Stones, with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers backing (!!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibNqFLdwdS4 << First hit for Peter & Gordon not written by the Beatles
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9LdPf-dJUI << Being a hit-writing songwriter allowed him to recognize songs he could and did cover brilliantly
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1AH9f5E8nK8 << Been there--Larry gets his next 10 12-packs on my tab...even now, all these years later.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ziLagAgoPCE << can't not play this one...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAevMOtkxQ4 << I did not seek out Aussie perfs--they just happen to be the ones where, late-career, he came alive. And that energy was reciprocated mightily (my fancy-schmancy way of saying "his love was returned in spades").
