What Are You Listening To?

First Principles: Neither of these gents could know the power and authority of Circuit Judges in the rural South from Reconstruction to the '70's. In sum: their authority was immense and unquestioned. Combine that with the assumed majesty of the County Sheriff, the lower class didn't stand a chance in unequal disputes or intra-ghetto (white or black) fussin'. The Sherrif picked a candidate, locked them up and when the CC rider showed, convicted his ass. It may have been similar in the ruralities of Britain and colonies--I don't know. I'd sure like to hear a Black man's take on this song (pick your candidate--mine's Eric Bibb).

I'm listening to Charmine Clamor since I'm a big fan of her!

And well you should be. Not just another thrush, she brings real feeling and real intelligence to the songs...and that's just jazz songs. She has an amalgam music she calls "JazzaPino", featuring elements of Filipino pop and American jazz, that in her hands, works well. Some tunes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqAbktvaBhc << local TV appearance and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCzIj4VhmGg << this one will get you and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anwNaN_xb_s << one of her most popular Filipino pop songs...sung in Finnish. Amazing.
BTW her last name is pronounced "cla-MOOR" though some may now clamor for her. Couldn't resist.

Taking me back once again to the 30's and 40's. Wait, I wasn't here yet, so I can't be going back. Maybe in my dads
head. I've always loved this stuff. Swing music, big band, whatever you want to label it. The Andrews Sisters
(Laverne, Maxine, Patricia) discovered they could sing in the mid 30's when they won their first talent contest.
American Idols with Patti the youngest at age 12. First hit was the leadoff track here in 1937. Most well known has
to be Boogie Woggie Bugle Boy. Bette Midler redid that in 1972 to revive the awareness of the sisters. Peak years
were in the WWII era doing a lot of overseas tours for the troops. Seventy Five million records sold is not too
shabby. I love this music because something from 75 years ago even exists. I didn't.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Ti-Pi-Tin

Best Track - Rum And Coca-Cola

If you ever go down Trinidad
They make you feel so very glad
Calypso sing and make up rhyme
Guarantee you one real good fine time

Drinkin' rum and Coca-Cola
Go down Point Koomahnah
Both mother and daughter
Workin' for the Yankee dollar

Oh, beat it man, beat it

Since the Yankee come to Trinidad
They got the young girls all goin' mad
Young girls say they treat 'em nice
Make Trinidad like paradise

Drinkin' rum and Coca-Cola
Go down Point Koomahnah
Both mother and daughter
Workin' for the Yankee dollar

Oh, you vex me, you vex me

From Chicachicaree to Mona's Isle
Native girls all dance and smile
Help soldier celebrate his leave
Make every day like New Year's Eve

Drinkin' rum and Coca-Cola
Go down Point Koomahnah
Both mother and daughter
Workin' for the Yankee dollar

It's a fact, man, it's a fact

In old Trinidad, I also fear
The situation is mighty queer
Like the Yankee girl, the native swoon
When she hear der Bingo croon

Drinkin' rum and Coca-Cola
Go down Point Koomahnah
Both mother and daughter
Workin' for the Yankee dollar

Out on Manzanella Beach
G.I. romance with native peach
All night long, make tropic love
Next day, sit in hot sun and cool off

Drinkin' rum and Coca-Cola
Go down Point Koomahnah
Both mother and daughter
Workin' for the Yankee dollar

It's a fact, man, it's a fact

Rum and Coca-Cola
Rum and Coca-Cola
Workin' for the Yankee dollar

After working my way through a good bit of his solo career, I thought it was time I look into his many, many live albums. This is the one I've read about the most, so I chose to go into it first. Excellent stuff, the version of "Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting" on this one makes the already brilliant original even more exciting

NINA SIMONE "blue lady-my baby just cares for me,volume 1" cd,2002.

this is the first disc of a two disc set, this is studio versions, the other disc is live material.
never really sure where to put Nina as she sort of flits between jazz/blues/soul and pop material, but the majority on here are blues and jazz, so this is where it goes on this occasion.
for some reason this cd has never really been one that i like, not sure why but i prefer Etta James and Billie Holliday for jazz, blues singers of that era and Nina just doesnt cut for me like i know she should.
seven likeable ones here but also seven that i dont like giving a rating score of 1.5,sadly the Shaggy one i posted earlier pips this one,but i dont like that one either.
tried posting this one earlier but i pressed a wrong key somewhere and deleted the whole post, so i cant be bothered posting all links to this one, so several that i do like are posted below including my favourite track "mood indigo". as you probably know i am not a big fan of instrumental pieces of work overall, and there are several on here, none of which i can honestly say i like

I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

the links are for the seven tracks i do like here:

Feel the same way--maybe I find her a little bitter, a bit hectoring, some kind of unappealing edge.

On the laptop.

The only record they made together, from 1959.

Two very different Jazz soloists, that on this album at least, manage to accomodate one another's styles very well. Coltrane has to be more restrained than was usual, but that's the only real concession.

Very nice, and onto the Buy List.

RoviMusic 5/5 stars.

latorius Wrote:I love Nina with a passion, she was the one artist that made the blues accessible to me as a white twelve year old, in a declining british industrial city in the late 50's. I saw her on an old Black and White TV, she had a 30 minute show (how I would like to get a copy of that) she was the first performer that made me realise there was more to life than the top twenty. She essentially played what was to be reeased as Nina at Newport, she was spellbinding, but agressive with incredible piano chops (I was studying piano at this point), but a beaudiful warm voice that seemed to envelop you. If you listen to the Animals, you can hear her influence, many of their repertoire were straight lifts from one or other of her albums. Alan Price, made a career of being the best Nina hommage.

The big problem with Nina's recorded work, is that she appeared on a bewildering series of labels in the 50's, 60's and even today. She has some stella studio work and some stella live work, but it is scattered across some 40+ studio and 20+ live albums. She is one of many artists who would benefit from a proper retrospective, the problem is that the rights to her work are held by a multiplicity of companies, and agreement is unlikely, so every small record company who has some claim to some of her work puts out a Best of or Nina's Greatest hits.

So we are left to delve amongst the output and unearth the pearls(they are there). May I suggest "Forbiden Fruit/Nina at Newport which was released together in 96. On Forbidden Fruit is a track "Just say I love him", some 6 minutes of pleading raw emotion, backed by Al Shackmans astounding guitar playing delicate fills and harmonics over and arround Nina's vocals. It is something that I have heard done once more with Judy Collins "The first boy I loved" backed by Stephen Stills from the "Who knows where the time goes". Then listen to her version of "Trouble in Mind" from the Newport album, it displays a female John Lee Hooker, very different but on the same emotional territory.

I read an interview with Nina in the 80's in which she said that she was not happy with any of her albums, but proud of individual tracks. So please explore her recorded works there are some true nuggets as I am finding

I think latorius gave up the chase for a superior Nina Simone anthology too easily. AMG shows excellent career-spanning anthologies in 2003, 2 in 2007 and one in 2011. Couldn't find that UK TV thing but Nina at Newport: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EtukbfynF...aqKpHYyY22

Abbey Lincoln was a unique jazz vocalist in that she wrote very good songs and sang them herself rather than relying on covers by other artists ! Her voice is somewhat reminiscent of Billie Holiday,,in fact she released an album Abbey Sings Billie.

This album demonstrates Abbey's unique vocal talent and song writing.
Unfortunately she passed away last year but left behing her a legacy of one of the foremost female jazz singers in history.

Here's a variety of cuts--attention to be paid to # 9--"Learning How to Listen": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHAK9wdzy...3gbS3Ng7Xy
