Lately I've been getting into some of the live electric Miles stuff. Its not quite like the Blue Note staples that have been occupying this thread over the past couple posts (Tongue), but I'm loving it.

As recommended by Soulman.

1959 release from the second of two SBWs from the Blues world.

An excellent Blues album with Williamson's classy harp playing all over it. The backing band includes such Blues luminaries as Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, & Otis Spann.

Includes a second disc filled with his '50s singles for the Trumpet label.

AllMusic 4+/5 stars.

This THE place to start with SB II and thanks to Tiggi for the mention. Available cheaply online, the comments mirror what Tiggi said. His harp and then-hot Chicago guys was a marriage made in Blues heaven. Somebody else thought so too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5GVQotwv9o And now:

I’ve been pleasantly surprised by this young band. Only two albums and a single so far but they have a retro rock/blues with a bit of country vibe that helps to restore my faith in new music.

The Stone Foxes manage to simultaneously pull off a retro rock/blues sound while bringing a noticeable (if somewhat hard to define) freshness.

No shortage of cojones here either as they take on blues classics and tough company such as:

Spoonful - Cover, Howlin Wolf(1960); Cream covered it in ’66 .

Rollin’ and Tumblin’ - Muddy Waters, Cream, R.L. Burnside… – Who didn’t cover this song?

Quite impressive and ambitious for such young musicians!

Their follow up album, Bears and Bulls, is no disappointment either. Highlights: Cover of Willie Dixon’s Little Red Rooster, and the surprisingly good Mr. Hangman. (You can even hear some definite AC/DC influence on this album. Always a plus in my book.)

Most recently The Stone Foxes have released a cover of I’m A King Bee (Slim Harpo, 1957). It is, IMHO, yummy, yummy, yummy!

A band that is definitely worth watching. I hope we see a lot more of them.

If there's any surprise about this band, it's that AMG has zip-sh!t on them. They bring a fresh voice to retro/roots music and it should at least be covered--anybody got contacts over there? Got you! What he was actually doing was moving $100Million in illicit profits from selling mis-labeled heating oil as Diesel fuel in Brooklyn, NYC to a Russian Mafia subsidiary in GetItOnWithSheepishStan. Sharp cookies, these Russkies.

i-Pod listening this PM in the garden.

A fine Blues/Rock guitarist who died too young. This is his debut from 1983.

I've always liked what I've heard from SRV. I've always thought of him (rather simplistically, maybe) as being like Jimi, but shorn of the excess. This is a great set of Blues songs of every stripe.

AllMusic 5/5 stars.

Complete album--"That Song" is #3. Folks, I've been caught in a Texas flash flood--trust me, zero fun, maximum terror (no not a kid--I was 28): [URL="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CLP73JK_7o"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CLP73JK_7o

latorius Wrote:I always thought SRV was overrated and if he had not passed away, he would be compared with Warren Hayes, Derek Trucks etc now. I saw him play twice in the states when I was a lot younger, he reminded me a lot of Rory Gallagher. I would certainly put SRV in the second 11 of rock/blues guitarists.

I won't waste time quibbling about where SRV was or his place at age 36--I'll take strong issue about where he might have progressed. Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks are 2 strong benchmarks but SRV would be right there with them circa 2014. And where would Duane Allman stand in this Pantheon? I'm not busting, just looking for a little more understanding...and a minute of grief for our loss. "...in the second 11..." is way tough. Passion fuels us, doesn't it? Occasionally to excess...

Where ya been girl? Born too late I guess. Never a huge fan of Linda's pop material. Not since the Stone Ponys anyway. But this I can sink my teeth into. Of course, this actually is pop music, in the 1920's, 30's amd 40's anyway. Think Linda did two other albums along these lines before reverting to current pop. She tried that country thing with Dolly and Emmylou, but Linda's not country. This style fits her best for me. Accompanied by Nelson Riddles Orchestra here, most of these tunes I was not familiar with which makes it all the better. There are a few standards, most notable being When I Fall In Love. Best for me is Can't We Be Friends with 3 others also making that top grade. Maybe these renditions are not as good as the originals, whoever they were done by. But when you haven't heard those originals, these work fine. Nothing I don't like here, making the album just shy of the love mark. This album was not a bad seller either making it to #13 on the charts and #8 on the jazz side, plus a grammy nomination alongside Madonna, Tina Turner, Pat Benatar and Whitney Houston. Linda didn't win.

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Falling In Love Again

Best Track - Can't We Be Friends

I thought I found the man of my dreams
Now it seems
This is how the story ends
He's going to turn me down
And say "can't we be friends"

I thought for once it couldn't go wrong
Not for long
I can see the way this ends
He's going to turn me down
And say "can't we be friends"

Never again
Through with love
Through with men
They play their game without shame
And who's to blame

I thought I found a man I could trust
What a bust
This is how the story ends
He's going to turn me down
And say "can't we be friends"

Why should I care
Though he gave me the air
And why should I cry
Even sigh
Or wonder why

I thought for once it couldn't go wrong
Not for long
I can see the way this ends
He's going to turn me down
And say "can't we be
can't we be
can't we be
can't we be
can't we be
can't we be friends"

I agree about Linda Ronstadt's middle years and in a duet, she can sound ludicrous *. By herself in a retro-modern setting, she's just fine. Had a good Mexican album too (Canciones de Mi Padre). No releases in the last 8 years but that one was a whipper-snapper: a joined album with Ann Savoy of Cajun material: http://www.allmusic.com/album/adieu-false-heart-mw0000726931 Tunes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBtURp9IdTk and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSXfMQuiqwg

Music to sweat by! You can almost feel the heat comin’ off this one! Every track is sweet. Only "criticism" I can force myself to come up with (and it's hardly that): while I Gotta Try You Girl properly steams, it's a bit long for me. I sometimes find myself wanting to move along to the next tune. Fantastic blues album. I can get lost in any track.
