Wonder if he and the Family Cohen have or would even want to collaborate? The mind wanders late at night...

A nicely tight band, playing a mix of originals & covers, with a good sprinkling of Robert Johnson songs.

Good to hear a good Blues band recorded in a small club...

Most of his mental troubles behind him, PG comes roaring back with this live album. NOTE: the cuts I play are not from this disc or engagement--they are representative of his playing however.

Discovered McFarland a few months back through Bill Evans, whom Im also a big fan of. He is one of the most underrated jazz musicians I have ever heard in my life. Some of his compositions are just breathtaking!

When you are sought out by the cerebral (Bill Evans, John Lewis, Steve Kuhn) but your main recording career is instrumental pop-jazz, you got a schizo thing going on. Died of poisoning in a NYC bar at 38. Excellent vibist and big band leader/arranger.

Instrumental funk jazz album, so not for me, though I'm sure it appeals to somebody. Mostly horn dominated, although they do show a liking towards that organ. Highly praised by allmusic, so I guess there's something there. Just hard for me to grasp. I realize that's my bias taking over. All yours instrumental enthusiasts.

Well you are of course entitled but anything from the Daptone Records group gets my attention (if they were even in the same room as Sharon Jones...). OK Staten Island Afro-funk may appeal to a limited audience but these lads ain't rippin'--there pretty much keeping it real.

Could have posted this in a variety of threads. Yes I should have known better. Couldn't help myself. I love them both, so it couldn't be bad, right? Ok, fine, it wasn't terrible. Would just take some plays probably to move 'em up a notch. Too bad it will never get those plays. I guess Brian got on a nostalgia kick. Really nice production and Brian sounds as fine as always. Beautiful Beach Boy harmonys. I guess I just have trouble mixing these genres, especially when it involves superb musicians in their own right. Don't think Brians voice fits at all with some of these classics. I did like 2 songs, just too many yucks. The real judge of this album would be someone who is not familiar with the songs.

This was a well-meant vanity project--Mr. Wilson just doesn't have the chops to pull it off. What happens when nobody can say "No!" to you and make it stick. Damned shame.

Outstanding jazz guitarist whom I discovered today. This particular album features the late Chet Akins with his trademark sound.

These guys sure were fun to watch. I remember watching a PBS special back in the day. Must have had an impact. The group wouldn't quit on trying to revive the 40's doo-wop era. I think we all knew that wouldn't translate to record sales, but I'm sure they were an awesome live act. Formed in 1969 jazz remakes were their forte. Not sure if they ever did any original material. Surely they had to have given it a shot at some point. This is their 8th studio album and there is only one standout for me, Baby Come Back To Me, and I can't recall the original artist, sorry. A brilliant demonstration of that doo-wop sound. There are some live trakcs on the album from a concert in Japan. There are some real duds here though with a fast Unchained Melody topping that list. Album gets a barely passing grade for me. Only made it to #127 on the U.S. overall chart but #11 on the jazz charts. A single of my favorite, screeched to a halt at #83 with Route 66 at #78. Bad audio clip included for Baby Come Back To Me, only because it is an excellent choreographed line dance routine to the song.

Avoid their first album Jukin'--it's pre-ManTran and a bunch of scraps. After that with that sterling line-up, they get realer. You want Mecca for Moderns or Vocalese or Swing or ...Even ...Meets Tubby the Tuba works well. My fave is one AMG thinks is sh!t--Tonin', most done with the original artists. And any vocal group strapping on the Chick Corea canon, well: http://www.allmusic.com/album/the-chick-...0000826997

I understand and share your feeling--too often it's sweet and sticky and kitschy. It doesn't need to be that way, as Jimmy Giuffre amply demonstrates:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUGPqEjJVx8 << this edges close to the popular, though with 2 monster players (Jim Hall and Bob Brookmeyer)

He recently died at 86, but these thoughts were prompted by this loving appreciation in June, '14: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/08/arts/m...ation.html << he was a deeply troubled princeling but deserved way more respect than he got.
