jazzboCR Wrote:An updating to the Bill Nelson canon, though even this only takes you up to 10 years ago. One is a compilation album, the other a 2-CD grouping of 2 separate though intertwined discs:
http://www.allmusic.com/album/chameleon-mw0000020921 and http://www.allmusic.com/album/whimsy-mw0000693777 Both are AMG 4-out-of-5 star albums--none of his are rated less than 3 stars and the majority are 4 stars or greater from respected critics--he will be studied/copied for decades to come.
That's funny , because neither Whimsy nor Chameleon are among my favorites , but I'm a picky SOB !
He's got some digital download cd's up on Bandcamp too . CDs of his I do like a lot a are too numerous to mention.
The thing I learned about his music is that there is always a surprise waiting , and never what you expect (the nature of a surprise) .
Best to just start collecting and don't stop. Back around 1995 I stumbled upon his Practically Wired cd , and I also picked up guitar again myself , after 20 years off. Between working on my own stuff and gathering Bill's cds , my big obsession with finding other music I loved came mostly to a standstill for a number of years . To me , it's almost to the point where I look at my music list and there's 'Bill Nelson' , and there's 'Everybody Else' . Kind of pathetic (LOL) but his music really is almost that important to me .

Badfinger The original hard-luck band, with some good early stuff from Paul McCartney. Getting ripped off by their manager, getting caught up in the Apple Records debacle, 2 suicides--couldn't catch a break.: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Badfinger

Todd Rundgren Another Mr. Music--multi-instrumentalist, song-writer, band leader, producer and strong inspiration (would the power pop genre exist as strongly without him? Doubtful). Been digging him for 40+ years: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Todd_rundgren

Al Kooper aka Roosevelt Gook (when overdubbing himself) Organ/piano/guitar, sort-of singer, songwriter, producer, has been on hundreds of albums by artists as varied as Bob Dylan, the Tubes and a children's TV series, group organizer/founding member of the Blues Project and Blood, Sweat & Tears, was a longtime lecturer at the premier music college (Berklee), memoirist of the '60's and with a successful solo career (at least in musical terms). {{ This somehow got cut off at the knees--here's the rest, added after MH's comment }}

Junior Brown For starters he invented a double-neck guitar with a difference--he calls it the "guit-steel". Country player by nature, he's listened to and filtered through his consciousness just about everything.

Mamie Smith Nearly forgotten today, she recorded the first known vocal recording of the Blues by a Black woman. Aimed at an African-American audience, it sold in big numbers and opened this genre to all that followed. She's not just important, she's seminal. Here's the wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mamie_Smith and here's some tunes including that first one:

Long John Baldry Working colleague/bandleader to the Stones, the Beatles, Elton John, Rod Stewart...the list goes on and on. Among the first openly gay British Bluesman and a great help to Reg Dwight in this regard. Actor/voice-over/writer/bandleader--moved to Canada in the '70's. Radney Foster Name's unknown to you prolly but not to all the C&W stars that have sung his songs. He's got 10 albums on his own + 5 more with Bill LLoyd, and with another coming out soon (his first in 5 years). A Nashville stalwart who chucked all the trappings to come home (his first solo disc has his birthdate and place as a title). A different, sometimes hard-nosed take on love, living and such. Also hosts a cross-genre show on CMT: http://www.cmt.com/show/cmt_crossroads/s...l#moreinfo Here's Mr. Foster's wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radney_Foster Here's some tunes:
