The Pixies. Underrated?

Jon, I think that I may respect you, if it is possible to tell from two thread posts. Nirvana, Mudhoney, the Melvins, these are the faces of grunge, and the Pixies are not underrated one bit, they have received ample praise where praise is due.

Read my other 417 posts. I hope you still do. Also, please come back and pat me on the back some more. :tongue:

The only person I can think of who doesn't think much of the Pixies is Steve Albini.

I really don't see them as underrated. The get talked about a lot on the interwebz. Especially doolittle, which is a great album.

I don't think Pixies are underrated, they just had a different image to Nirvana which wasn't go f-ing nuts ALL the time. So Pixies probably appeal to a different demographic in some ways.

You're definitely right about the pixies. They were very creative, I just think people couldn't get into the noisy live type recordings that much. But the pixies have been listed as influences by so many great bands like Modest Mouse =]

I personally believe that both Surfer Rosa and Doolittle are amazing landmark albums.

It's impossible to say that Nirvana was not directly influenced by the Pixies. As has been previously stated, Cobain flat out referenced them in multiple interviews. He even specifically stated that Smells Like Teen Spirit was pretty much created by him trying to rip off the Pixies.

So why is Nirvana considered the bigger band in some circles? Why is Nirvana the band that people immediately associate with that era? I think that they were just far more accessible and the timing was right. I'm not sure if there is any more to it than that.

I agree... I think theres much more dynamism within the music of both albums compared to the simplistic power chords of Nirvana. I'm not saying that Nirvana isn't brilliant... just that the Pixies dont get the attention they deserve
