Probably Automatic For The People. It's their most acoustic album, and it's a good mix of Rock N Roll (Ignoreland) and acoustic, string-laden beauty (the beautiful Nightswimming). Michael's lyrics are a fantastic mix of profoundness and jibberish (especially on The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite). New Adventures In Hi-Fi is excellent as well, but this is R.E.M at their very best. My personal favourite is Nightswimming, but I also love Imitation Of Life (Up) and Electrolite (New Adventures In Hi-Fi).

Definitely Automatic for the People which introduced me to their music way back in the early 1990s. In some ways if REM were a drink they would be high quality, high caffeine coffee. To me they are definitely not music to have a beer to like a lot of the rock and old metal bands. One song from the album that I never listen to now is Everybody Hurts as it makes me sad and depressed but the rest of the album is great.

it's Automatic. It's really their only album that leaves little to debate. The real treats lay in the flip side and start with Monte Got A Raw Deal and the weakest track is Man On The Moon which is still quite strong..the whole beast is a master stroke. Don't get me started

I only have Automatic, and I didn't vote because I haven't heard most of the content of most of their albums. Glad to see though that this also seems to be the popular choice.

My one minor quibble about that album is: why did they choose the down-tempo song "Drive" to open it? That's an "album cut" that belongs somewhere in the middle.

...and I love others too. and drive opening automatic is excellent choise. IMO.
