BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN "high hopes"
this one is "the boss'" seventeenth studio album...
its basically a collection of tracks that didnt make it onto his last
four studio albums, plus a previously unreleased version of
"the ghost of tom joad" with a full band sound...that one is okay
as a song but it lacks the haunting frailty of the original version...
the rest of the album is okay, its nothing special, but then again,
there's not much bad to say about it neither except it lacks
something that i cannot put my finger on, maybe with repeat
listens i might figure it out...
its pretty hard to knock Springsteen at the best of times IMO, this
album is a bit below par,its an average Springsteen album and on that
listen would slot inbetween his "lucky town"/"human touch" albums
and "magic"
"allmusic.com" rate this one a converted 2.1, me, im giving it a pass mark
because it is Springsteen and it will grow on me a bit once i buy it so
1.6/1.7 from me

the album debuted at #1 on the UK charts this week...
am expecting the same thing here next week as his tour starts here the following week and as we all know, a tour always boosts sales...

Sorry to say it as I am a huge Springsteen fan but I think Jerome is right, he just needs to retire and enjoy all the money he has made over the years...oh yeah and give me his guitar, he won't be needing it.

glad you agree with me...this album is dissapointing for Springsteen,especially after "wreckin ball" which i thought was pretty darn good.
i mean, what did i write again?...
oh yeh, i placed this new album somewhere between "lucky town"/"human touch" albums which i dislike with a passion and "magic" which also barely makes the grade also IMO.
i now think that after his current tour which starts here in Perth in 13 days time(not that im counting), that he should retire also...
he is going to become irrelevant and an embarrassment to himself(like McCartney/Rolling Stones are) if he keeps going.

most of "wreckin ball" was actually recorded prior to Clarence Clemons passing away a couple of years ago, and being a lifelong friend i think a piece of Bruce died along with him on that day, not sure if you'd call it his "edge" or his "fire", but something certainly died within him, which is only natural.

The thing with these senior artists is that they can't stop touring and releasing new albums! It's in their blood, it keeps them alive! Good or bad they will always have a substantial fan base! I do not think you will be disappointed with Bruce if you keep an open mind and remember he's no spring chicken, Crazy mate! That's what I did when I saw Macca and in April when I see Black Sabbath it will be a little different since I am not a big Ozzy fan(voice shot). I am going for Tony's fabulous guitar playing which has never deteriorated IMHO !

i have decided i will not be buying the album(i have all his others)
if Weller,Macca,Nick Cave make another substandard album i'll give up on them also...
just hoping Neil Finn doesnt dissapoint when his new one comes out in a couple of weeks.
Neil young has just about lost me also...
"fork in the road","le noise","americana" were all substandard and "psychadelic pill" was a bit overblown with extended guitar solos(and lets face it NY isnt a great guitarist by any means!)...
anyway back to Springsteen,this article is from "billboard.com" this morning
