S.G. Craft - The Gold Machine - 2008

No pic for this one. Local author, as in a neighbor in my gated community. Found out she had written a book, so naturally, who wouldn't want to read a book written by someone they know. She has boxes of copies to give away. I take it not many were sold. Here's hoping she never comes on to this forum. She is now 70 years old and a very nice lady, so I wouldn't want to hurt her feelings. It's not a very good book. Mystery story about a professor who invents a machine that can basically sift gold from any dirt. I guess it's supposed to be everywhere. Bad guys find out about it and kill him to steal his machine. Problem is these bad guys don't come into the picture till about 10 pages from the end of the book. In a good mystery you should be able to make some guesses along the way. There is no way you could have guessed this one because they were never in the story till the end of the book.

yes it was, an awkward moment
ran into her at the community mailbox
said exactly what SteveO said I should say, plus some blah-blah-blah
I think I pulled it off ok
then as I was leaving, she told me she was working on a sequel
something tells me it will never see publication
but maybe I'll get to read the manuscript someday

Can't wait for the sequel I bet!!!!

Not my cover. This guy has written numerous volumes on the subject. This scant 230 pages can hardly do it justice. Recapping 5 years of a war only works for those new to the subject. Interesting, but like getting one bite of your favorite meal.

James Joyce - Dubliners - 1914

The worst thing I have read in a long time. A collection of 15 short stories about life in Dublin at that period. Joyce shopped this around to 15 different publishers over a period of 9 years before it saw the printing press. Now considered a classic, forced onto students in institutions of lower learning. Should have stayed buried in an attic somewhere. Guess you had to be living in that period, or be a Dubliner, or be stoned.
