I am an instrumentalist/composer and have many times composed around nature. Some of my instrumental pieces gained the interest of singer songwriter types and it mostly had to do with the chord voicings and changes. Many of the thoughts entering my mind as I sat in a field composing on guitar..COULD have been produced into lyrics. I suggest trying that and see what happens. My best advice to any writer who has writer's block is to never copy what an innovative songwriter did, but instead attempt to research their influences and go to that source to see what you can accomplish from it. Don't always go for the writer, but their source and create from that. In Progressive Rock, you should listen to some of the same Classical composers that the icons did and create your own voice from it....or find a Classical composer that most Prog icons did not listen to and again...create from that.
If you are a songwriter ..who has in the past..created some interesting songs, but presently has developed writers block, sit yourself down quietly , think about what bothers you in life and how you can't seem to change it. Sit by the window and observe mother nature's snow storm while jotting down ideas for lyrics. After about an hour, you might have an idea specifically what you want the song to be about. You may even have an idea of how you want your album to sound or flow in it's entirety before even recording it. I used to do this when I traveled on a bus up and down the East coast. Staring out the window observing a father and his kids playing in the snow and imagining what life would be like if I had kids and a home of our own. The road is very lonely and that depression creates fine songwriting. It's all a fantasy that you embark on by creating ideas that develop into lyrics about the world that you are not part of. When you finally write the lyrics, pick up your guitar or keyboard and see if something doesn't become naturally fitting for a song. There are people with sad dealings in life that you...the musician/writer...will meet on the road. Many. many fantastic songs have been written about people musicians met on the road.

I think this idea is great for writing a song or to get an idea to write a song.

I find this is casually dismissive of the vasty gulf between the 10's of thousands of songs written and the infinite varieties of human experience. Not nearly enough has been done to explore the relationships between God/Holy Mother Nature, man and mammon, for example. Build new shelves or even a new structure, I say.

It could be a person or an experience in the past, or what you're looking forward to. The possibilities are endless. Heck, people even made songs about foxes lol
