My top 5 punk bands:
1. Sex Pistols
2. Minor Threat
3. Flogging Molly
4. Dropkick Murphys
5. The Clash
I'm partial to Celtic punk because I like the draw from folk tunes and how they transform it into a punk style. I've always found Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphys to do this very well, but there are a couple other Celtic punk band that I like, too. I'm also a fan of straight edge punk because I am posi-straight edge (not in a gang, just living a positive, drug-free life style and I like punk music). How could I not mention the band that started the genre: Minor Threat! And there's always the classics: Sex Pistols and The Clash.

I like all the bands you listed. Sum 41 was the first of their kind, but they're not really punk. They're a combination of metal and pop punk. Great ******* band though. I've dug all their records up through Chuck.
Green Day is a classic example of a band selling out. Keep in mind Green Day is my all time favorite band and I don't think there's anything wrong with selling out. You gotta be able to make money. But yes I agree they are one of the best examples of a classic punk band and they definitely paved the way for punk rock as we know it.
Good Charlotte are pop punk and were part of that short lived spotlight on the punk scene.
MCR started out as a horror punk/emo punk band and eventually died out before they could sell out.

My top 5 punk bands would have to be (in no particular order):
The Flatliners
These guys made my favorite record of all time. Their 2010 release Calvacade is an incredible record. They are also a great example of a modern band playing in a classic punk style.
The Menzingers
I first heard of these guys before they signed to Epitaph and couldn't help but think that they were edgy. I don't know how else to describe this band besides abrasive, edgy, and downright punk. Their newer stuff is a little poppier, but still awesome. They have an album coming out tomorrow I believe which has been streaming this entire week and is one of the best records I've heard.
Green Day
Everyone knows Green Day. ******* awesome band.
The Swellers
I found these guys in a small venue in Canoga Park, CA. Played a ******* killer show. I bought their record that night and have been a fan ever since.
The Offspring
Just a classic example of a punk rock band with a sense of humor. ******* love these guys.
