Having looked at the
What's Your Favourite Type of Metal Poll, I noticed that the general genre of Heavy Metal is first with 25%. However if you combine Black, Doom, and Death Metal the 3 genres add up to a whopping 42%!!! These three genres are my favourite and they cross paths quite often from one genre to another. For example, the great Opeth could be considered using all three genres as well as many others! You often see bands with these three genres listed....they are easily interchangeable!
Any comments...I just think that the Doom. Black and Death genres could be combined together and is the true preference among MD members!

I have listened to bands that over their careers if not over an album have covered these sub-genres and more. I find the more variety/creativity a band shows the more likely I am to continue to enjoy them. I think you are onto something SteveO, what say others who listen to metal?

Difficult to catagorse this one as I like many heavy bands from old deep purple and Sabbath , Uriah heep to newer death metal like napalm death , slayer, wasp and many from the new wave of heavy metal in the early 80s like iron maiden, saxon , crocus, widowmaker, quartz, angelwitch ..

I have to go with Black metal because the base of Sigh's songs is usually Black Metal. Also many of my favourite bands at least have a little bit of influence from Black Metal in their sound.

I voted for Heavy Metal because it covers a lot of different bands and their music that I love. I've loved Metallica's music ever since my mid-teens (a long time ago!). A friend also introduced me to Sepultura in the early 1990s and in their own way they are just as good as Metallica. Back in the early 80s I used to think of Ozzy Osbourne as Heavy Metal but now I just think his style was hard rock.
