Much better than my previous review of a Ben Folds Five album. Four years later than that one and Bens first solo effort. Ben's only charting single comes from this album with the title track, but only on the modern rock chart. The album hit #42 on the mainstream side, with a #18 in Australia, and #73 in the UK. Ben had made his home in Australia in 1999 after hooking up with his third wife. Up to four now and divorced from that one now. I dont thin marriage is your thing Ben. Although this is billed as a solo album, like most others, there are many other contributors. Ben does play multiple instruments, with the addition of guitar being the main difference between this and that previous one. Most tracks do have a fuller sound.

THE BIRTHDAY PARTY "prayers on fire" cd,1981
this was the brilliant Nick Caves first album...
much better than than the debut, which i have already posted and which i do not like...
not as good as his Bad Seeds or Grinderman material, but still an important release in his catalogue...nothing great on here IMO, but more than enough to show the talent that would follow over the next couple of decades...
tough call for me to pick a favourite track on here, so i offer you two links to listen to...
all up, there are thirteen tracks, twelve i do like, but one that lets the album down...thus the album gets a score of 1.9 from me

SONIC YOUTH "goo!" cd, 1990
sonic's sixth studio album, and apparently the most commercially sounding(if they ever were 'commercialised'!)
these guys are known for their sonic sounds and massive feedback sounds....they inspired Neil Young to release that abysmal album"arc" which was an accompaniment to his "weld" live set...
this one is a bit patchy in parts, with too much going on to focus IMO, the album did make it to #32 in the UK, but barely scraped into the top100 both here(#94) and in the US(#96)....only one single touched the mainstream charts anywhere, and that happens to also be my favourite track "kool thing" which made it to #81 on the UK singles charts...
i still cant make up y mind whether i like or dislike these guys, so a borderline score of 1.7 is just about right here

Only thing I have by these New Jersey guys. Not a bad little power pop group reminding me a lot of
Weezer. This is their third album and the first to hit the charts here at a weak #115, athough it did
eventually go gold. Stacy's Mom was the single, which went to #21 here and #13 in Canada. Follow ups
of Mexican Wine and Hey Julie did not fare as well. Early tours with Lemonheads and Smashing Pumpkins
opened the door for them in the late 90's. Signed by Atlantic, they were dropped after two albums and
no success. Signed with a newly formed label for the next one and it clicked. Songs from here have
been used in tv series Scrubs, Malcom In The Middle, One Tree Hill, and commercials for L.L. Bean and
Dr. Pepper. I mentioned the Weezer sound but the standout for me is Hung Up On You which is totally
different from anything else on the album. A country tune that hit's the spot.
