THE HOLLIES "the air that i breathe:the very best of" cd,1993
26 tracks, most of which were either hits or regarded as rock standards now IMO....
the only problem i have here is that i prefer to listen to best of sets track listings in chronological order in order to listen to the progression of an artists skills as writers, but hey, thats just my opinion of how they should be released!
you name it, its probably on here right from their early singles through to a single written by Nik Kershaw ('the woman i love') which was recorded to support the release of this set.
interesting to note that a young elton John plays piano on "he aint heavy,he's my brother", and also supplies piano and backing vocals to "i cant tell the bottom from the top".
so of 26 tracks here there are only two i do not like, the rest, mostly 'love' tracks...love these guys, and loved them even before i was aware that Graham Nash was in the group....(same goes for The Byrds, loved 'em prior to knowing David Crosby was with them also...guess it all links up eventually doesnt it?!?
anyway, history has it that Nash left in the summer of 1968 to move to the US in order to pursue a solo career, there he met Crosby, becoming good friends...Crosby mentioned that he was about to do something with Stephen Stills in the studio...Nash sort of invited himself to the sessions and history was made...CSN was born out of a totally accidental situation.
enough of the CSN history lesson, back to The Hollies....they made some of the most memorable and catchy hits of the 1960s,Nash left, Albert Hammond wrote 'the air that i breathe' for them and they became true international soft rock stars into the 1970s and beyond...
these guys still tour(without Nash),they toured Australia in the last three or four years(i didnt see them though), and recieved rave reviews for their shows...true rock survivors IMO, love 'em,love 'em, love 'em!
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Mazzy Star - Among My Swan - perfect music for the early hours of the morning (4.30 or so). Hope Sandoval has this ethereal quality to her voice but you have to be in the right frame of mind to listen to this.

from my library (cd)
Couldn't be any worse than his last one for me. This ones all Dylan, vocal, guitar, some
harmonica, stripped down. A couple of love tracks. Biggest down side is none of the tracks are
originals. Traditional songs with a Dylan arrangement. Wasn't familiar with any but the worst
track, that stupid Froggie song. My dad used to sing that and it drove me crazy. Even I knew
frogs didn't go around courtin' mice. Although the critics were back on board with this album,
it was not well accepted by the music buyers, only reaching #51 here and #18 in the UK. Low by
Dylan standards and still a downward trend. And we're back to no links for a Dylan album.
I LIKE THIS ALBUM
Worst Track - Froggie Went A Courtin'
Best Track - Arthur McBride
1) Frankie & Albert **
2) Jim Jones **
3) Blackjack Davey **
4) Canadee-i-o **
5) Sittin' On Top Of The World **
6) Little Maggie **
7) Hard Times ***
8) Step It Up And Go *
9) Tomorrow Night **
10) Arthur McBride ***
11) You're Gonna Quit Me **
12) Diamond Joe **
13) Froggie Went A Courtin' *

this one escaped me also...has a song called Canadee-i-o..????....interesting ..I wonder if it's a put down or a limerick of some kind?...considering when he appeared here twice his shows were only an hour long ?????...I didn't go when he came the secong time for an hour (didn't go the first time) but I was going to go to the second one but reviews were bad and he didn't do my Dylan fav - Knockin' on Heaven's Door so I really would have been perturbed for shelling out a hundred bucks or so!
I know a lot of people wouldn't care about an hour long show...just to see Dylan would be a thrill in its" self...but not for me ...having said that ...such a Music Icon..over 55 years of tremendous songwriting..an inspiration to all...his voice has changed a bit over the past few years but hey it's Bob Dylan..unique voice and a unique musician to say the least!
As for Froggie Went a Courtin' ..reminiscent of the old pre-depression era ...campfire songs for the hobos...Leon Redbone had a modest career in the 70/80s singing these type of ditties...I have the album as well as MH I think..I like the sound..basic and different at the same time. CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:i have never even heard of this one by Dylan, but i have heard his version of "froggie" before, very forgetable IMO...
The ultimate connection is between a performer and its' audience!

STARSHIP "we built this city:the very best of..." cd,1997.
i bought this one on a whim a long time ago....
Q: what happens when a great 1960s psychadelic rock group dont die from all the chemicals they injest?
A: they become a whimsical 1980s bighair band with stupid overblown rock ballads!
enough said IMO!
...and i cant be bothered listening to these again while posting them so only the favourite track is going up here!
I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM
worst track: any one of around a dozen tracks
