Forgive me if you will for posting this here, but I am very much down in the dumps today.
The latest kick in the guts is, I believe, about to happen and I am going to have to get the vet to euthanise my little mate, 'Mouse'.
He turned thirteen last August or September (never been sure of his birth date) and we got him from the kids who lived next door when they were about to get rid of both he and his brother - that was October 1995. He was little more than a baby at the time, extremely thin with his hip bones sticking out like something from one of those shots of Jews from the 'Holocaust' and sick with sarcoptic mange at the time which spread to both our other dogs - and us. The vet cured he and the others and our doctor set about curing Shirley and I.
As a tiny pup, he used to somehow climb over a five foot corrugated iron fence and fall into our yard just to be with us. He loved/loves travelling in the car, loves our cats and is one of the sweetest dogs I have ever had the pleasure to have come in contact with.
Since about 5:00am this morning (Monday - January 26, 2009: my time) he has been unable to walk as his back legs have given out.
I contacted our local vet and had to lift him into the back seat to drive him into Lithgow this morning where they have given him a shot of cortisone in the hope that it may aid him to walk again. However, I believe that age may be taking its toll on both he and I. Lifting him into the car bloody near killed me this morning and, as much as I will miss my darling boy, I am almost hopeful that the vet says he should be put down.
I can't really look after him anymore if I have to carry him around and I don't wish to see him in pain as I love him far too much. He and my two girls (my cats - 'Caitlin' and 'Catriona') are pretty much all that has kept me going since Shirley's passing in August 2007.
