#481 - Rick James - Super Freak - 1981

running recap for me - 3's=12, 2's=6, 1's=2
this one - ***
from the album: Street Songs
Written by Rick James, Alonzo Miller
Produced by Rick James
Chart action: #16 US

the players:
Rick James – vocals
Temptations - backing vocals
some guy named Dary - sax

The only Rick James track I can say I love. It's the funk people. It even got to be a hit for a second time when MC
Hammer ripped it for U Can't Touch This. Didn't know The Temptations were on background here and Rick even name
drops them in the song. The song bettered it's pop performance on the R&B chart at #3. Can't find that it even
charted anywhere else. Rick probably made more money off of U Can't Touch This than he did off this.

Lyrics

She's a very kinky girl
The kind you don't take home to mother
She will never let your spirits down
Once you get her off the street, ow girl

She likes the boys in the band
She says that I'm her all-time favorite
When I make my move to her room
It's the right time
She's never hard to please

Oh, no
That girl is pretty wild now
(The girl's a super freak)
The kind of girl you read about
(In new-wave magazines)
That girl is pretty kinky
(The girl's a super freak)
I really love to taste her
(Every time we meet)
She's all right, she's all right
That girl's all right
With me, yeah
Hey, hey, hey-heeeey

She's a super freak, super freak
She's super-freaky, yow

Everybody sing
Super freak, super freak

She's a very special girl
(The kind of girl you want to know)
From her head down to her toenails
(Down to her feet, yeah)
And she'll wait for me at backstage
With her girlfriends
In a limousine
(Going back in Chinatown)

Three's not a crowd to her, she says
(Manaja trois)
Room 714, I'll be waiting
When I get there she's got incense
Wine and candles
It's such a freaky scene

That girl is pretty kinky
(The girl's a super freak)
I really love to taste her
(Every time we meet)
She's all right, she's all right
That girl's all right
With me, yeah
Hey, hey, hey-heeeey

She's a super freak, super freak
She's super-freaky, yow

Temptations sing
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oooooh
Super freak, super freak
That girl's a super freak
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oooooh

She's a very kinky girl
The kind you don't take home to mother
She will never let your spirits down
Once you get her off the street

Blow, Darry

I listened to a lot of Rick James in the 80s. Very good uptempo funk and I love Super Freak!

[CRAZY-HORSE]

Rick went to the US in the late 1960s from Canada with Neil Young...got thrown out of the country because he had no ID/papers on him, took him years for the US to allow him back in again!!!!

that said, i love 'super freak' ***

#480 - Beastie Boys - Sabotage - 1994

running recap for me - 3's=12, 2's=6, 1's=3
this one - *
from the album: Ill Comunication
Written by Beastie Boys
Produced by Beastie Boys, Mario Caldato Jr.
Chart action: #19 UK, #38 Canada

the players:
Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz - Vocals, Guitar
Michael "Mike D" Diamond - Vocals, Drums
Adam "MCA" Yauch - Vocals, Electric Bass, String Bass

Never been a fan and own nothing. Don't care for this one. The first single from their fourth album. Made a lot of
Best Of The Year lists, and surprised to see it did not even chart here. Nominated for five MTV Awards but losing
out to Aerosmith and REM. Appears in several video games. The song will be remembered for centuries, as it appears
in Star Trek which is set in about 230 years from now.

Lyrics

I can't stand it I know you planned it
But I'm gonna set it straight, this Watergate
I can't stand rocking when I'm in here
Because your crystal ball ain't so crystal clear
So while you sit back and wonder why
I got this ******* thorn in my side
Oh my, it's a mirage
I'm tellin' y'all it's a sabotage
So listen up 'cause you can't say nothin'
You'll shut me down with a push of your button?
But I'm out and I'm gone
I'll tell you now I keep it on and on
Cause what you see you might not get
And we can bet so don't you get souped yet
You're scheming on a thing that's a mirage
I'm trying to tell you now it's sabotage
Why; our backs are now against the wall
Listen all of y'all it's a sabotage
I can't stand it, I know you planned it
But I'm gonna set it straight this Watergate
I can't stand rockin' when I'm in this place
Because I feel disgrace because you're all in my face
But make no mistakes and switch up my channel
I'm Buddy Rich when I fly off the handle
What could it be, it's a mirage
You're scheming on a thing; that's sabotage

[CRAZY-HORSE]

yep, like me also...never been a fan and dont own nothing neither...!

[SteveO]

same here guys but I like the song.

[TraceNspace]

Could be because I'm from another generation but I love the Beastie Boys and Sabotage is them at their finest

#479 - Foreigner - I Want To Know What Love Is - 1984

running recap for me - 3's=13, 2's=6, 1's=3
this one - ***
from the album: Agent Provocateur
Written by Mick Jones
Produced by Mick Jones, Alex Sadkin
Chart action: #1 US, #1 UK, #1 Canada, #1 Australia

the players:
Dennis Elliott – drums, vocals
Lou Gramm – percussion, vocals
Mick Jones – guitar, keyboards, background vocals, multiple instruments
Rick Wills – bass, background vocals
New Jersey Mass Choir - backing vocals

Arena rock at its perfection, band and song. Confession though, it's the choir that puts this over for me. Great
song regardless, with Lou Gramms vocals but man when that choir kicks in, we're talking chill zone stuff. The bands
biggest selling and only #1 single from their fifth album. Numerous covers including Mariah Carey and Winona Judd
and even Alvin & The Chipmunks in their movie.

Lyrics

I gotta take a little time
A little time to think things over
I better read between the lines
In case I need it when I'm older

Now this mountain I must climb
Feels like a world upon my shoulders
I through the clouds I see love shine
It keeps me warm as life grows colder

In my life there's been heartache and pain
I don't know if I can face it again
Can't stop now, I've traveled so far
To change this lonely life

I wanna know what love is
I want you to show me
I wanna feel what love is
I know you can show me

I'm gonna take a little time
A little time to look around me
I've got nowhere left to hide
It looks like love has finally found me

In my life there's been heartache and pain
I don't know if I can face it again
I can't stop now, I've traveled so far
To change this lonely life

I wanna know what love is
I want you to show me
I wanna feel what love is
I know you can show me

I wanna know what love is
I want you to show me
And I wanna feel, I want to feel what love is
And I know, I know you can show me

Let's talk about love
I wanna know what love is, the love that you feel inside
I want you to show me, and I'm feeling so much love
I wanna feel what love is, no, you just cannot hide
I know you can show me, yeah

I wanna know what love is, let's talk about love
I want you to show me, I wanna feel it too
I wanna feel what love is, I want to feel it too
And I know and I know, I know you can show me
Show me love is real, yeah
I wanna know what love is...

[CRAZY-HORSE]

that is a very good song MH, huge huge hit!!!!!

[Jerome]

I agree with your summary MH - the choir does it for me too. But I think their best track was Double Vision. Used to play it to death.
