Guitarist Joe Satriani files plagiarism lawsuit against Coldplay
#1
Quote:An American rock guitarist has filed a lawsuit against Coldplay, accusing the popular British band of plagiarising one of his songs on their latest hit album, according to court documents published on Thursday.

Joe Satriani, known for his instrumental compositions, alleges Coldplay's song "Viva la Vida" had "copied and incorporated substantial original portions" from his own track "If I Could Fly" recorded on an album released in 2004.

Satriani's lawsuit demands damages and "any and all profits" related to the alleged copyright infringement.

A representative for the band was not immediately available for comment.

Coldplay's latest album "Viva la vida," released in June, has topped the charts in Europe and the United States. The recording helped Coldplay win seven nominations for the 2009 Grammy awards.

Something interesting about Coldplay shocker!

Sounds fairly identical - but Coldplay are much too nice to have done this intentionally. But I always love a courtroom drama so lets hope there's lots of acrimony.

I think Coldplay are mediocre, money hungry hacks! Let the redistribution of their undeserved income begin!

Just watched the Youtube item. Sounds bang to rights to me !!

How could they expect to get away with it ??

On a similar note, I was listening to the Dr Feelgood song Wolfman Callin' a couple of nights ago, and it's clearly based on Pink Floyd's Money, but I don't recall any legal action concerning that.

That whining vocal in Coldplay just irritates me.

Would there be a private agreement such as a MOU - memoranda of understanding between groups /artists ?????..that the general public is unaware of ??? I don't know . Maybe Pink Floyd couldn't be bothered...is Dr. Feelgood that big ? If not maybe they decided not to go after the lesser known artist ????

You may be right that they thought it wasn't worth pursuing.

See what you think:
