Actually that's a much more useful definition of indie to define current music but your post confirms for me that UK 'Indie' and US 'Indie' generally must have come from different sources and influences.

The UK version very definitely came from bands who used independent labels to release their music - most obviously the Smiths. I can't think of any of these bands that were in any way 'rock' and I do think of 'indie' in this way as only really existing in the 1980s.

US 'Indie' seems more rock-based and 'alternative' and so don't fit into my narrower 'British' definition.

Current UK use of the word is probably more in accordance with your more generic 'indie' definition but still retains I think the 'less rock' sensibilities.

I think I have now completed my quota of squashing music into categories for the day!

Reading throught this thread, I thought I'd be able to recommend some indie songs to the threadstarter. But it turned out to be a discussion on what "Indie" really means. Now I am a bit confused too. I have understood "Indie" as what it meant in the UK.

Anyways, for some indie music, I suggest you take a look at Tribe of Noise. There are lots of "Indie" music there that you might find interesting. Smile

I really like Arctic Monkeys too - the first album anyway- and they were great live I thought

(keep this quiet though, 'cos heaps of scorn could be.....well.... heaped upon us)

Erm, I guess you dont really know what anything iss anymore. lol.

Id suggest Owl City if you want something softer and I like I mean almost acoustic soft. x)
They have a little of an electronica feel to them too, if you like that.
And If you like them try Kill Paradise

But the other posters probably know more about indie than me sooo....

Scorn all they like, Arctic Monkeys are sensational, even their tribute band 'Antarctic Monkeys' are good live.
