Imagine if Cee Lo Green hadn’t tinkered with the lyrics to John Lennon’s classic “Imagine.”

He probably wouldn’t be catching heat Monday from outraged Lennon fans.

Green got into hot water for his rendition of the classic ballad he performed on NBC’s New Year’s Eve broadcast from Times Squre.

Instead of singing “nothing to kill or die for/ and no religion too” as Lennon wrote, Green changed the lyrics to “nothing to kill or die for/ and all religion’s true.”

Furious Lennon fans unleashed a torrent of angry Tweets.

"The whole point of that lyric is that religion causes harm," tweeted one fan with the handle @geekysteven. "If 'all religion's true' it would be a pretty bleak place."

Green, 37, who rocketed to fame in 2010 thanks to a hit song with an unprintable name (it’s radio-friendly version is “Forget You”) fired back at his critics.

“Yo I meant no disrespect by changing the lyric guys!” he tweeted. “I was trying to say a world were u could believe what u wanted that's all.”

Green also exchanged Tweets with other angry Lennon fans but has since deleted them.

Lennon had no use for organized religion and infuriated millions in 1966, when The Beatles were at the height of their popularity, after he predicted Christianity would “vanish and shrink” and added, “We’re more popular than Jesus now.”

i dont like to see any lyrics tampered with by anyone....
that also goes for artists tinkering with their own lyrics like Elton changing the lyrics to "candle in the wind" for a media hungry Diana when she died!

Billy Bragg is the only one ive heard who does it very well, but no-one else!
"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight

I agree, and that goes for the music and delivery also
Watched a Bob Dylan concert yesterday (courtesy of Jerome) from Woodstock '94.
I know that he has always done this
If not for knowing his lyrics, I would not have recognized any of the songs.
Just as soon not have watched it

saw Dylan early 2011 at a festival here in Perth...actually did Hurricane....no verses, just the chorus (this is the story of the hurricane...etc) and did it in a jazzy/blues style, like you, if i didnt know the song i would not have had any clue as to the song, partially because allhe does is fumble and mumble his way through songs now!...and many who attended didnt know which song was which that he was playing....a real dissapointment IMO...but guess what?, i'll probably go see him again if he ever came here because well.....he is Bob Dylan....im a sucker for the punishment he dishes out in concert!

I am happy to hear this because Cee-Lo Green was not dicing John lennon's song but wanted to make it his own type of song. What is wrong with that. Only dummies don't want to see that. I feel for Cee-Lo. Some Lennon fans are too hardcore. SERIOUSLY.

Thought this was appropriate. I was in Build A Bear the other day and they were playing Cee Lo's song "F**k you," but without lyrics ... instead it was a chicken clucking along to the music. Haha.
