COLDPLAY "mylo oxyloto"
i tend to wait with baited breath for new Coldplay albums to come my way hoping to hear something a bit more sophisticated than the usual run of the mill alt,rock/pop that occupies the airways and charts, and this one is no exception IMO.
right from the first time i heard "yellow" all those years ago i knew these guys had something special.
not sure if this is a good or bad thing but normally it takes a few listens to fully appreciate a Coldplay album, but this one had me hooked immediately from the opening notes of the title track through to the fade out of the final song.
this album is more traditional in terms of its tunes than previous efforts, yet remains true to the Coldplay guitar sound of their last souple of albums....added are lots of synths and orchestrations, even a surprise duet on "princess of china" with pop queen Rihanna who seems to have been on a bit of a high in charts for around two years now.
the album shows 14 tracks but three of them are shortinstrumental intro's to the songs they preceed, usually less than one minute so they do manage to hold my attention for the duration.
several brilliant acoustic tracks here also, two guitar based and two that rely on piano and/or orchestrations.
ive got a feeling that all these songe will tranform well onto the stadium rock stages that Coldplay play, and the overall feel is that any of these tracks could be released as singles over the next twelve months and still be pretty big hits....
all the tracks here either recieve a 2.3/2.4 score as they all border the like'love rating without hesitation!
the sound on the album appears to be more compressed and dense than previous albums....not sure if dense is the right word for it...maybe Jerome can comment on the links i post for it and give me a definitive explanation or word to describe the overall sound here???
there are also several samples dotted around on the album and in the sleeve notes in the cd booklet Brian Eno is credited for"additional composition"....whatever that means?(another question for Jerome to answer!!!
also noticed that on todays Aussie album charts this one debuted at #1....and for the first time in several months Adele has lost the top spot on the charts....pretty sure this will happen in the US/UK and everywhere else this week also....
all in all this appears to be a fine album and along with Adele,Laura Marling,Boy and Bear,Noah and The Whale will probably complete my top five albums of 2011.
do yourselves a favour and seek this one out, again(and i know ive said it before with Adele,Rumour,Marling and Boy and Bear this year) you wont be dissapointed!
