Canadian music awards create a new category for best heavy metal/hard rock artist !!!
#1
Finally, the JUNOs (Canadian Music Awards) created a new category recognising the best heavy metal/hard rock artist!!!!! They like myself and countless others must have come to their senses and realised that there is some great music being produced from this genre !!!!

New award embraces heavy metal
By Jason Spencer, Postmedia News September 29, 2011 3:05 AM This year's Juno Awards have a new category: metal/hard-music album of the year.
"Eligible albums include metal, metalcore, hardcore, heavy rock, thrash metal, death metal and their respective sub-genres including [but not limited to] nu-metal, power metal, grindcore, extreme metal, industrial metal, Viking metal, folk metal, doom metal, gothic metal, speed metal, and sludge metal," the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences announced Wednesday in a news release.
So expect a few faded T-shirts adorned with obscure band names, road-worn jeans and plenty of tattoos among the more stylishly clothed artists as this bunch rides into battle for the 41st annual Juno Awards, held in Ottawa from March 26 to April 1.
To be eligible, works must have been released between Sept. 1, 2010 and Nov. 1, 2011. They are judged based on artistic merit and technical proficiency, and not on album sales.

Hopefully they don't make the same mistake the Grammy's did. The first heavy metal grammy went to Jethro Tull - proving once and for all the Grammys didn't even understand what Heavy Metal was

LOL...I remember that R !!! ,,,it was a big question in some format on Who Wants to be a Milionaire and it floored me when the answer was Jethro Tull !!!!! The contestant(worth 500,000 bucks..maybe the whole enchilada of a million) didn't get the right answer...probably due to the fact that JT put out a hard rock album and not metal ! It created a minor controversy so the question was probably Who won Grammy Award for Heavy Metal Category in 1988 ?

I have my doubts and I am skeptical if a truly bonified Heavy Metal group will win! They had to add the tag "Hard Rock " to ensure that one of Canada's top metal bands - ****ed Up wouldn't win !!!....lol...can you imagine when they announced and the winner is ....****ed Up...lol.

please explain what these 17 "genres/sub genres" are!

and in anyway can you all undertand why i have a problem with all these genres..i mean 17 are listed here under theHard Rock unbrella... then you add the sub-genres from all the other standard genres and end up with some 100+....crap IMO!

If you seriously are interested in the differences go here: http://mapofmetal.com/#/home <--- this site really does a very good job of defining the related sub-genres in metal.
It takes a bit to load but will certainly help you navigate through the huge variety of styles in the Metal Genre.
BTW:
Yes I do understand all of those specific genres but they are of interest to me.

Much like the genre of Latin Music - some will say (not incorrectly by the way) it's all latin music. Though a bossa nova does not translate well with a beguine or a samba or a merengue (they are all related - all latin) - the list goes on and on - and different interpretations of those styles create different sub-genres. The Cuban Clave pattern makes it next to impossible for Brazillians to play with them as they flip it around (Cubans go 2 - 3 and Brazillians go 3-2) - doesn't seem like much to the casual listener but it's a big deal to a rhythm section if they are playing with a soloist who plays in one of those styles.

It really depends on whether you have the interest to dig deeper. If you don't that's cool but just because you don't care does not mean it does not exist. There is nothing wrong with saying I like/don't like latin music, just as there is nothing wrong with saying I like/ don't like metal music.

Those who like/play it have more specific definitions to improve their communication with other interested parties. For most, Latin or Metal is more than enough to describe the music genre they like or do not like.

Map of Metal is one of my favorite sites. Do you use Northern Warriors?

Mr. Esteemed Crazy Horse, my brother from the land down under !!!!

I totally and positively agree with you !!!!!!

crap crap crap crapola !!!

Is there anyone out there who can humanly explain why we have to have over a hundred genres subgenres sub subgenres ????

That's why the new metal/hard rock category is a farce because a fairly well known group like Rush (I don't think they qualify maybe any 2011 releases?) will win the damn thing !!!![

So in essence they're only focusing in on one standard well known genre - Hard Rock !
