Is Big Star's #1 Record the best album to never be huge?
#1
Seriously, we could all name dozens of bands who were influened by the sound of Big Star, a group who had the balls to write jangly guitar tunes like the Beatles when it just wasn't cool, and long before New Wave bands like The Records and Bram Tchiakovsky. I believe they were way better than the Raspberries, who did manage airplay, and a huge hit ("Go All The Way"), along with some mid-charting stuff.

Alex Chilton's influence on many mainstream artist was long and noted. When his death last happened 3 days before he was to play with "Big Star" in Austin I was bascially devasted. But the the tribute to Chilton was a wonderful show. Thanks for the memory gater!

I have a copy of the album, but haven't yet played it enough to be able to answer.

It's definitely a very fine album, but there are loads of influential albums out there that have sunk without trace. I guess some of the Velvet Underground albums would have to be considered alongside # 1 Record ?!

Trout Mask Replice, Zen Arcade, Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain, Inflammable Material, the list goes on. It's good record, but that's quite a claim you've made there

Funny you mention VU. As a native New Yorker, I was born with the usually acquired taste for them, and Patti Smith, and The Heads. It's kinda like how it took years for the world to get Bruce, when us tri-staters always did. I know this may sound kind of snotty and city-centric, but Hell, IT IS NEW YORK!

Of course it's quite a claim... "Go big or go home!" (Words to live by.)

2 bands you don't hear mentioned much, Records and Bram.
I have albums by both
