What Are You Listening To?
Tiggi Wrote:^ I agree.

Moondance always comes close to the top of my fave album list.

Astral Weeks is the critics' favourite, but whilst it's very good, it won't be for everyone.

I like pretty much everything I've heard that he's done, but if I had to recommend three, they'd be Beautiful Vision, Inarticulate Speech of The Heart, and No Guru, no Method, no Teacher.

None of these except perhaps the last are as Jazzy as Moondance, but I think you'll like them.

thank you Tiggi

Shepherd delves into the laid back feel and understated approach to blues music he started to mess with on his last album, 10 Days Out. This series of EPs featuring Shepherd jamming with various delta blues survivors leaves little to be desired for even the most finicky of purists. Excellent performances from Clarence Gatemouth Brown, Henry Townsend, Etta Baker, harpist Big Daddy Pattman and the hilarious Cootie Stark.

Garden i-Pod listening this PM.

3-disc set of Ella singing Duke from 1957. Only the Gershwins figure so prominently in her Songbook series.

3 hours of Swing, Bop, & Blues with liberal sprinklings of her signature Scat (Why do we use the same word for free-form Jazz vocals as we do for animal crap ?!) singing.

This sort of thing goes very well with relaxing in the sun...

IMELDA MAY "mayhem" 2010, cd. #7 UK.

i bought this album a couple of months ago thanks to seeing her perform on "later...with jools" but just got around to listening to it.

this is Imelda's third album release, she is a 36 year old from the emerald isle.
the album is primarily a jazz album with bits of rockabilly thrown in either as individual tracks or infused within the jazz tracks.
IMO Imelda is to modern jazz what Amy Winehouse was to 'soul' music with her superb debut album.
theres an interesting jazz/rockabilly version of Soft Cell's classic eighties hit "tainted love" on here along with a new version of her 2005 debut single "johhny got a boom boom"....never heard the original recording of this but this one is brilliant.
the album starts off at a frantic pace then slows down in the middle only to liven up towards the end again. along with that "johnny" track the two best ones are two of the slow moody pieces, "too sad to cry" and "all for you" which really let her jazzy vocals come to the foreground to show off her fantastic ability.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Some months ago I named Robert Johnson as the most influential "Modern" musician for popularising the Blues. I was taken to task for not considering CP. This is a fair point, and I have virtually none of his music, so bought this 3CD set.

It's really Patton, and not Johnson that popularised the Delta Blues, and Johnson was a few years later.

This collection is unusual in that it intersperses Patton songs with those from other Blues artists to illustrate the development of the form in the early years of recorded Blues. If you think plagiarism is a new phenomenon, think again. They were all pinching ideas for all they were worth.

Considering some of these recordings are over 80 years old, they don't sound too bad.

Excellent introduction.

MARTHA WAINWRIGHT "sans fusils,ni souliers,a paris" 2009,cd.

got this promo cd from my cd shop man yesterday(and i didnt buy anything,he did try to con me into getting the new Foo Fighters album but i dont like the half dozen tracks ive heard so far!).
not the sort of thing i'd buy because i have this thing with whole albums sung in foreign tongues(individual songs are ok though),
this is MW's tribute album to Edith Piaf, the whole thing is sung in French and is really surprisingly pleasant, i ended up listening to it twice back to back.
as im not familliar enough with Martha's nor Piaf's back catalogue im not sure if this is good or bad by their standards, however, as a one off album i was impressed....well worth a listen.

1999 album from veteran UK Bluesman.

I guess some would say that JM isn't really relevant these days, but even if he's cruising you still get someone whose passion for his music has never diminished.

A decent set of contemporary Blues toons.
