Sludge? What on earth is that?
That's it, I'm too old and uncool for this game - I'm going to give up on music and start knitting

I know Isis and Cult of Luna! I won't have to make a start on that sweater.
I'm rubbish with genres
Thanks

I know all of those bands to some degree, except for Acid Bath. I like all of them okay... Though I haven't heard much of any of them. I do have an Isis album and a few Neurosis albums, though.

As you like Nirvana so much you should check out albums by the Melvins and Earth. Kurt Cobain was a big fan of both and those two bands heavily (no pun intended) influenced Sludge Metal. Sludge is related to doom metal. Both are what their names imply - heavy and slow.

Yeah, the Melvins are good... Though considering their output, it's unfair to merely pigeonhole them as "sludge." But that's basically what their earlier stuff is.

That's why I made the distinction that the Melvins influenced sludge metal. They mostly predate it. The bands inspired by them and a few others fully developed the sludge metal sound.
