DO RE MI "domestic harmony" 1985, vinyl. #6 Aust,
i dont know how to explain this album, i was going to put it up yesterday giving myself time to think about it...and all i could come up with is: The Church meets INXS??
it was the bands second album, they only had three then lead vocalist Deborah Conway was offered a solo contract, she still performs to this day and has one of the finest voices around.
i suppose the album is very 'art studenty'...if that makes sense. the single "man overboard" was banned in the UK for having words like "pubic hair on my pillow", "anal humour" and "penis envy", its a very unusual song as it has no chorus, nor does it have a catchy melody, but it still works very well.
im not going to say any more because you need to listen to the tracks links, but if you like The Church, i think you will like this.

Third album from Icelandic Chill-Out-Post-Rockers.
Mostly sedate and ethereal, but some of the tracks build into colossal, Floydian sonic edifices.
Vocals are in an invented & consequently unintelligible language (a la Liz Fraser), so they can only be seen as another musical instrument.
Should suit broader-minded Floyd fans, so check them out Jerome, if you haven't already...
Allmusic 4/5 stars.

On the fulcrum of the Loud Cave/Quiet Cave spectrum.
His quality control is usually pretty reliable, and this album is no exception.
I like Nick Cave.
Mrs Tiggi drools over Nick Cave (not literally, obviously) ...

JOHNNY WARMAN "walking into mirrors" 1981. vinyl #68Aust
never heard of Johnny Warman?
im not surprised, as this album was the only album he released that gained a chart entry...and that was in Australia.
Johnny is a 'cockney' from London's East End, he released his first single in 1977 and several more till the turn of the decade, his debut album and these singles didnt chart anywhere, somewhere, somehow Australia took to the single "screaming jets" from this album and he had a hit record, he released a further album in 1983,which never charted anywhere, he then went into concentrating on writing songs rahter than performing them. Johnny wrote songs for Asia, Cheap Trick, Jefferson Starship, Aqua and Ringo Starr.
about this album:
think XTC,Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins (in the air tonight-era) and you'll get the musical idea.
Johnny's good friend Peter Gabriel did actually play on this one and supply backing vocals to several tracks. the first side(first 5 tracks) are very forboding, paranoidesque tracks of imminent destruction via a nuclear war written after JW watched "appocolypse now"., the second side is a bit more uptempo and slightly more uplifting lyrics, but less inspiring generally

In a similar vein to Sigur Ros.
This is grittier than the SR album "reviewed" a few posts above, and is entirely instrumental. Five tracks, totalling 75 minutes, so there's plenty of breathing space for development of the music, but it tends to evolve slowly.
Another Steve Albini production.
Good album.

from my library (vinyl)
Sophomore effort from the Aussie lads, and my fav of theirs that I have heard. Three top rated tracks with the country flavored Hayride To Hell doing it for me. Felt like I was ridin' the range. Only one that failed to click, with the single Like Wow-Wipeout. Love Faulkners voice and he made the band for me. On the title track here, Brad Shepherd takes that chore. No clip for that. Four singles came off of here with the leadoff of Bittersweet charting the highest in the homeland at #10. The album went to #5 there but could only manage a #140 peak here in the states.

Worst Track - Like Wow-Wipeout
Best Track - Hayride To Hell
Charlie was a driver and he hardly spent a night at home
He rarely saw his family, trucking loads those long weeks on the road
And Charlie would drive
For miles and miles
Charlie had a teenage daughter he thought of as a little girl
But one day he came home his little girl had grown-up news to tell
"Oh Daddy", she cried "Oh Daddy, I tried but on the hayride how I fell
That was a hayride bound for Hell."
Now Billy Jackson was the father but he wasn't man enough to own
And his daddy was the mayor and he said,
"Charlie, just leave my Billy-boy alone "
Billy had to hide
But there was guilt inside
And you can't hide from yourself
That's just a hayride bound for Hell
Charlie's daughter died whilst giving birth to Billy Jackson's child
And Billy Jackson ain't been seen around these parts for quite a while
And Charlie would drive
For miles and miles
And his tail-lights say farewell
He's a hayride bound for Hell

"like wow-wipeout" was the first 7" single i bought by the Guru's, loved it at the time but it has worn a bit thin over the years, both that and "bittersweet" still get a fair amount of airplay here on 'retro' stations, along with several other singles from other albums.
i have this one on cassette...not sure why i got the cassette and not the vinyl at the time, and not sure i like it enough to get the cd.
the Guru's are still touring and released a new album in the second half of 2010,cant remember seeing it chart though.
