THE BEATLES "sgt.peppers lonely hearts club band" 1967. vinyl/cd

i neednt write anything really, the cover explains who and what this one is!

not too many albums can be said of as influencing music for decades after they were released, this is one of probably a handful that can hold that candle high!
released in the 'summer of love', "sgt.peppers" is a historical statement not only for music, but for society in general back in 1967. i feel that although this is a good album it does sound dated and stuck in '1967'(as ive argued about in a thread some months ago), that, however, does not make it any less important or enjoyable to listen to.
this one has everything, the psychalelic overtones of Lennons tracks, the whimsical pop tunes of McCartney, the eastern influence of Harrison, and the token vocals on a McCartney song by Ringo...along with one of the greatest songs ever put to tape in "a day in the life", a joint John/Paul song which finishes with a single piano note, allbeit be accident that lasts for 43.5 seconds.
theres backwards guitars and vocals, snipets of jumbled music and some of the finest lyrics the Beatles ever wrote.
Gryphon may correct me on this, but i believe "strawberry fields forever" and "penny lane" were recorded during these sessions also, if that is so, it shows the strength of this album when neither track is included on the album and also again just how good the Beatles were.

worst track: you gotta be joking...its The Beatles!!
best track: take your pick!!!

Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane were in a sense the beginnings of Sgt Pepper.

However the first song recorded for Sgt Pepper was Only A Northern Song which did not make it to the final album...........

Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane were actually part of another intriguing idea for an album...........The Beatles intended at first, to record a concept album about Liverpool.......However EMI were desperate to get a single out after the Beatles stopped touring and pressured them to issue Strawberry Field/Penny Lane.......................I would love to know how the Liverpool album would have progressed if they had gone on with it.Cool
Nice to be able to go back to trust and friendship!!!!!!!!!

It's a mixed up sensation this being alive
Oh! it wears a man down into the ground
It's the strangest elation
I can't describe it
Oh it leaves a man weary
It makes a man frown.

DIRE STRAITS "making movies" 1980.cd & vinyl #6Aust, #4UK, #19US

what do this album and Springsteen's "born to run" have in common?
1. Roy Bittan of the E-Street Band plays piano on the album
2. Jimmy Lovine who engineered "born to run" produced this one
3. "romeo and juliet's" main riff is a slowed down version of "jungleland's" intro from Born To Run.

this is the first album in a hat-trick of glorious classic albums from the Straits, and like the other two,Love Over Gold & Brothers In Arms, it cant be faulted from music through lyrics and on to production.
the opening three tracks swing between rock, jazz, blues and dare i say it classical music with ease through a combined total of tweny one minutes of playing time. tracks four to six are slightly shorter in length but tend to stay within the confinds of rock, with a bit of blues thrown in for good measure on "hand in hand". the final track, "les boys" is the worst song on the album but still manages to rate "**", and that is only because it just doesnt seem to fit on the album with ease,it appears to be tacked on at the end.
i just find it amazing that Mark Knopfler cannot read or write music and has never taken a guitar lesson in his life, yet knows his way around a fret board with the ease of the great guitarists like Clapton.

Another purchase inspired by Griff.

The Studio album Midnight Blue, from 1982 is a sumptuously recorded offering that deserves attention. Good songs, beautifully played. The booklet draws comparisons to Al Stewart, with which I'd agree, and I'd add early Dire Straits, and Chris de Burgh (maybe). Whilst the songs are obviously Brit-orientated, the music is more West-Coast US.

The live album isn't as appealing to me, but is again a top recording, and the songs are strong. The backing is predominantly simple & acoustic, and the music is closer to UK Folk than the above.

A good introduction to a definitely impressive talent.

Breakthrough debut album of Folk-inflected Soft Rock by the recently deceased Scot.

Contains the ubiquitous Baker Street, but don't let that put you off... Stuffed full of well-crafted songs, this is an excellent album, and Rafferty's vocals are sublime.

Allmusic 4+/5 stars.

Right Down the Line is one of the classic love songs with brilliant guitar work - simple but soaring. A great loss.....

ELO "discovery" 1979. vinyl and cd #1Aust, #1UK, #1US

Lennon once said, that had the Beatles survived into the 1970s,they would have sounded like ELO. and to some extent,he may well have been correct, as ELO borrowed a lot of their sound and melodies from them and addapted it to create their own individual sound.
that may well have been true up to 1978, but with "discovery" there were elements of disco also, nost noteably in "shine a little love" and "last train to london", "confusion", "need her love", "the diary of horace wimp" are very Macca,Lennon and Beatle sounding respectively.
"midnight blue" is a beautiful ballad, "on the run" and "wishing" have all the hallmarks of classic ELO, and the final track "dont bring me down" is a fusion of all the above elements combined to make one of the great singles from the 79/80 period.
according to Jeff Lynne the album was made up on the spot in the studio, he used the same set of four chords in the construction process and sang whatever came into his head with only slight alterations throughout.
all in all, this is a very good album with no dud tracks.

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

Wynardtage - Alone

Now I'm pretty sure this isn't most people's piece of cake on here, but wow, the outro is breathtaking and the whole songs brings a kind of sad, lonely emotion to the table that everyone can recognize him/herself in... and that while the lead synth is pretty cheery sounding.
