What happened to the 80s?

i thought the early and mid 80s were cool, music lost me from 87ish to around 94ish, i cant remember buying much at all during that period.

Early 80's were my dead zone. Relatively speaking anyway.
Had more to do with where I was living.
Had just moved to central Florida from which I could not receive any radio other than pop, which at that time was disco.
Any record shops carried the same.
Totally lost contact with any good music for about 3 years, till I got out of there.
That couldn't happen today, with the internet.

i'd hazzard a guess to say half my collection is 80s material from 80-86....just because its the era i started really buying music, some of it is too bad to think about, but most of it is quite good IMO

I was born in '76 and had my first record player by the time I was 5. I used to spend my $2 allowance every weekend on a record single. I loved, loved, loved all things 80's. I was in love with MTV and had two older brothers who got me into some of the more alternative music of the 80's.

The only part of the 80's that were good were the bands from the 60's and the 70's that were still playing and recording. A very bland period musically. The 90's were an improvement. The 80's were all about hairdryers and makeup. Too much focus on the person instead of the process.

Don't know if I would use the blanket statement,
but I would say in large part, you are correct.

During the 80s in retrospect there was a fair bit of good music,,,dominated by Macca and Michael Jackson. Also I enjoyed Depeche Mode, The Cure, Joy Division. Dylan released Infidels !!!!, Tinderbox by Sioux Sioushie and the Banshees, Sisters of Mercy, Misfits, Peter Gabriel, Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, David Bowie, BWOHM, U2's performance at Live Aid !!!!!

The only thing that really sucked in the 80s was the death of John Lennon !

The Ray-gun Revolution began the downfall of the USA, which sent periodic shockwaves across the world over the next few decades, like the collapse of 2008.
In music, the art form became a comodity, and the rest is Just Beiber and Disney Kids putting out albums!
The weed is better now though, or so I am told...

Steve O I agree, you have nailed it. 80's was a time of a whole new innovative approach to music, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Peter Gabriel to name a few, changed music history.
