Agree with the effect that soft furnishings can have.
Also, when we first moved into our current house, we used a small room as a temporary living room while renovations were undertaken. Our hi-fi sounded incredible in the smaller room, but the intention was always to use the current room.
Just the size of the room can have a dramatic effect.
Never seen the point in graphic equalisers. That's already taken care of in recording, mixing, & mastering, in my head...
My speakers have front-firing ports, and I'm not putting foam rubber in them for anyone :nono:

I've just remembered an embarrassing story to illustrate the lengths loony audiophiles will go to to squeeze out the last fraction of performance.
When I first got into high quality audio gear, the magazines in the UK were full of advice on how to get the best from your equipment, and I remember reading that someone had found that the lacquer applied to the brass pins on mains plugs could adversely affect sound reproduction. The advice was to use metal cleaner to remove the lacquer from your mains plugs. I tried this, but you had to keep doing it regularly because the lack of lacquer caused the pins to oxidise, which needed to be removed to prevent audio deterioration.
I was convinced it worked, and kept it up for a year or so. Didn't cost much...

its all about the "feel" of the music IMO, but some clarity does help at times to understand some of the vocals in modern songs

Angel Records(EMI) produced some very high quality classical recordings from the 60s and 70s at reasonablly low prices I have found ! The records sounded clean and crisp even at a high optimum on my NEC turntable and speakers.
