Strongly suggest (if you have not already) you listen to Bob Dylan's 'Infidels'. The lyrics are incredible. 'Jokerman' is pure genius. 'A Sweetheart Like You' is brilliant too. A lot of Dylan fans claim his best work was in the 60's. And he did write some amazing stuff ('Sara' for one), but 'Infidels' is songwriting taken to a whole new level.

INFIDELS is my favourite Dylan album, both lyrically and musically, i think Mark Knopfler's guitar work is very good for the album. 'jokerman' , 'man of peace' and 'union sundown' are equal to anything dylan has written.
as for Neil Young, as good as 'harvest' is, i do think its a tad overrated...its not his best album. go and listen to 'after the goldrush' , 'harvest moon' , 'zuma' and 'prairie wind', you may be surprised

Agree about Knopfler's work. Saw him in Brighton a few years back. Class stuff. Listen to 'Last Exit to Brooklyn' - some movie music he did. Spectacular! But back to Mr Young. Have ATG, PW & HM. Like them all too. Have never heard Zuma. So there's something to try. Still feel Harvest is his best work. But it's just an opinion. The last Dylan album is pretty cool too. (Can't remember the title right now and it would take me a couple of hours trying to find it in my collection).

The first song I learnt to play guitar was the Talking Heads' Psycho Killer. It's made of pretty basic, easy chords. Plus, it was an absolute favourite of mine at the time - so I was motivated.

Many moons ago when I was but a wee lad my parents decided to send me off to piano lessons. I wasn't having any of it. I just wanted to kick a ball around all day. How I regret that decision. If you have any kids that are in a similar frame of mind glue their hands to the damn instrument and put up with the squealing. So I guess the first song I really learned to play went something like this - plink plonk plink plonk - PLANG! End of my piano playing career. Lessons completed - 1!

one of the reasons I took up bass guitar is because when I would jam along to Black Sabbath songs on the family acoustic guitar, I used to always pick out the bass lines on the bottom strings.
So it would probably be a Black Sabbath song that I learned first - War Pigs or Iron Man I would guess. I used to learn lots of metal songs when I first started playing bass. Phantom Lord by Metallica is one that comes to mind.

The first song I learned was Oye Como Va by Santana. When I started, I wanted to learn nothing but leads, so this was very appealing to me. Ha!
