Bio
Named after the phrase the Lakota Nation gave to the Fetterman Battle/Massacre of 1866 in Wyoming â in which Crazy Horse led his warriors to a victory that resulted in the death of 100 white soldiers â the Hundred in the Hands fuses synth pop with post-punk and dream pop elements, making for a sound thatâs equally danceable and dreamy. The Brooklyn-based duo of Jason Friedman and Eleanore Everdell balance their duties with Friedman handling guitars and beats and Everdell providing vocals and keyboards. The pair played some gigs in London that caught the attention of Warp Records, who signed the Hundred in the Hands and released their debut single Undressed in Dresden in April 2010. An EP, This Desert, followed in May, and a full-length album was expected that autumn.
Album Review
Based on the Hundred in the Hands' debut EP for Warp, This Desert, the band could have gone in two different directions for its first full-length. The duo could have gone deeper into the experimental leanings shown on some songs, or the sleek disco-pop displayed on others. For their self-titled debut, they chose the latter â with mixed results. Jason Friedman and Eleanore Everdell worked with pop mega-producer Richard X, among others, which explains the albumâs sleeker, slicker feel, while louder guitars, the occasional live drums, and more aggressive synths add a sharper, and more mainstream, edge. This serves the Hundred in the Handsâ singles well, adding muscle to the Bloc Party-like riff of âDressed in Dresdenâ and extra bite to âYoung Arenât Youngâ's dreamy disco-pop. However, this approach robs the band of the mystique and quirks it showed earlier, and magnifies some of the problems that were lurking on This Desert. Everdellâs voice is still pristinely beautiful â especially on âLovesick (Once Again)â's massed harmonies and âThis Day Is Madeâ's ghostly choruses â but it doesnât always suit this albumâs harsher sound. When she tries to match the energy and attitude of her surroundings, as on âGold Blood,â it sounds like a pale, awkward imitation of Karen O or Siouxsie Sioux; when she remains aloof, thereâs a disconnect that isnât quite pronounced enough to be an intriguing contrast. The Hundred in the Hands still sound most convincing on songs about emptiness: âPigeonsâ and âDead Endingsâ let Everdell be an ice princess crooning about vacant spaces, late nights, and early mornings over frosty synths and chugging guitars. The duo can still cast a mood, and thatâs what makes this debut all the more frustrating â all the parts are here, but they donât come together as often as they could and should.
