Greatest Hardcore band ever?
#11
Are there any significant non-American hardcore bands? I know this was a American movement but I presume it must have directly influenced bands elsewhere

I quite like Rites of Spring (think they're hardcore?) but obviously I must give Black Flag more than a cursory listen some time!

Well in the root form, Minor Threat and Black Flag do get my vote for best hardcore band.

I would also like to bring up a Chicago Spanish hardcore band of the 90's Los Crudos and give them great props.

Yeah, Black Flag is great to listen to. Greg Ginn is the greatest punk guitarist.

I think it was all over. Hardcore was certainly in the UK. There it got dubbed "Oi!". The Exploited may be the most well known band from that era.

I wouldn't have thought 'Oi!' was hardcore- though I'm thinking of bands like Sham 69- Don't really know The Exploited - still would have thought they were just punk.

When I think of Oi! music I do think of the whole skinhead look - which would definitely have made me uncomfortable - so maybe that's why I seem to have entirely missed hardcore while growing up in Ireland!

Upon further research... Oi! and hardcore are not the same thing. You're correct. Hardcore was more extreme while Oi! tried to stick to a more "pure" form of punk rock. I think hardcore was mostly an American thing but its influence was felt everywhere.

Apparently many Oi! bands tried to distance themselves from the skinhead movement. Skinheads liked Oi! not the other way around.

Yeah - I think you're right about the skinhead thing. Though I can see why skinheads would be attracted to it. It was really 'working class', usually not very 'intellectual' and very 'British' - not that there's anything inherently wrong with any of this - some of the songs were great.

We appear to be getting a little off topic though!
