Discovered McFarland a few months back through Bill Evans, whom Im also a big fan of. He is one of the most underrated jazz musicians I have ever heard in my life. Some of his compositions are just breathtaking!

Listened to this in the garden in very humid conditions, and that would seem to be the perfect environment for this music. Laid back, & very good indeed.

Hamid Drake & Bindu - The Taste of Radha's Love from Reggaeology [Rogue Art, 2010]

To oversimplify, the 68-minute program alternates overtly reggae-based pieces with other world-based rhythm outings, all spiced with pockets of improvised colloquy and timbral exploration. Given Drake's extensive reggae back story, it's no surprise that the riddims carry conviction. Both trombonists stretch the horn section vernacular with expressive soloing and relaxed conversation, without the need to draw on avant technique to make their mark. Parker nails the off-beats, but still gets to step out, with guitar hero calisthenics, on the standout opener, "Kali's Children No Cry." Elsewhere he's more restrained, while Abrams gets right down to the roots. Maddox is the wildcard, whether plying a litany of shushes, clicks and pops, crooning sweetly, or intoning spiritual texts.

The Ava Gardner break-up album.

Close to being the first concept album, since all the songs deal with broken love. Despite the melancholy mood, this is a sublime work.

I still don't quite know what I feel about this guy. It's good that there is still a public appetite for primitive Blues, but I can't help wondering why the people who bought this haven't gone for the originals.

Despite all that, this is a good album, and he does seem a very likeable character.

Instrumental funk jazz album, so not for me, though I'm sure it appeals to somebody. Mostly horn dominated, although they do show a liking towards that organ. Highly praised by allmusic, so I guess there's something there. Just hard for me to grasp. I realize that's my bias taking over. All yours instrumental enthusiasts.

Could have posted this in a variety of threads. Yes I should have known better. Couldn't help myself. I love them both, so it couldn't be bad, right? Ok, fine, it wasn't terrible. Would just take some plays probably to move 'em up a notch. Too bad it will never get those plays. I guess Brian got on a nostalgia kick. Really nice production and Brian sounds as fine as always. Beautiful Beach Boy harmonys. I guess I just have trouble mixing these genres, especially when it involves superb musicians in their own right. Don't think Brians voice fits at all with some of these classics. I did like 2 songs, just too many yucks. The real judge of this album would be someone who is not familiar with the songs.
