So, I've recently been looking into solo piano recordings, and, since I'm completely new to this genre, I have no idea what I'm doing.

Basically, I'm looking for some recommendations to get me started. I know the genre of "solo piano" is quite large and varied, but the kind of stuff I'm looking for is the inspirational, fast-paced stuff you get in movies when somebody really gets in to playing. The only example I seem to be able to come up with is from the movie Penelope - the piece Max/Johnny (James McAvoy) plays in the empty restaurant before he gets interrupted.
That's a horrible description/example, I know. But if you've got even a vague idea of what I'm talking about, please just throw a couple names at me to get me started.
Thanks a bunch!

Shine is brilliant Jerome....the pianist it is based on(David Helfgott) still performs here in a Perth hills suburb of Rolystone several weeks a year...only seen him do his thing once, he has similar looks to Geoffrey Rush and rush's manerisms in the movie are almost spot on!

I agree - fascinating film. Did not realise he is still active and playing. You learn something every day......

This isn't quite solo piano- but running along what I see people have posted you might want to look into The Penguin Cafe Orchestra. It has strings and winds, but definitely this type of feel... Although Silver Star of Bologna is a solo piano piece you should check out.

Oh man. So good. Composer Simon Jeffes decided he needed to take a visceral approach to music after he got sick and had a series of waking dreams. Check out the history and stuff at their website if you're interested
